The Neatherlands seem to be doing ok even though all those areas that are blue on the map are below sea level.

Be serious. There were many factors in N.O. that played a role in it's destruction. I doubt The Neatherlands can be comparable to it.

That was the year. The year was an El Nino year, and strange & bizarre weather rocked the globe - the U.S. has not had such a deadly tornado season since, especially in New England. While 1953 event was an unbelievable powerful Atlantic storm with winds of 100 mph and a massive tidal surge, the Netherlands is still a success story compared to previous centries when much more frequent flooding occured, alot of those events from storms far less powerful than the 1953 storm.

One thing that would be interesting would be to see a comparason in engineering between the dike system in Holland and the levees in New Orleans. I believe the 1953 storm was a one in a 1000 year event, and the Netherland now have a system strong enough even for a repeat of that storm.
