hey guys,
so i've been laying out a few tracks for a while, but i still can't get over the fact that my kicks sound like . they sound muddled and dull, especially when there are many elements playing together all at once. i've tried converting the midi kick drum to wav, applying compressors to it, but still can't get it to sound right.
i've thought about taking a sample of a kick drum from another track, but before i resort to that, i still want to learn how to make a nice, thumping, heart-pounding kick drum from scratch.
any pointers, links, or posts you can direct me to? any advice? i'm currently using cubase sx 2 and also have sound forge 7.
thanks for the help! |

get a decent kick sample to start with. play with comp/ eq/ etc
you will find some on the net for free. it is very hard to create a massive kick imo. your better off finding a good one to start with. |

a thing i usually do is to combine several kick samples for a fuller sound (and i can give my kick the "tone of choice"). it also makes me able to have a layered kick wich can sound good.
one thing that might be good can be very little ducking on the bassline so the kick sounds stronger. |

lots of EQing
that and midi sucks for nearly everything, so use samples.
I use hardware to make my own kicks, sometimes I sample them and send to people for use.
Know anyone who can make you a custom kick? |

Watch you get like 400 PMs after this...
I peronally spend about 2 hours on kicks at the start of each project now. Just mad tweaking and tweaking and tweaking.
I find there is an exact punchiness I like and I NEED that exact sound. Not that that helps you any... but I usually end up making my own with various pieces of software and tweaking in whatever audio proggie I'm using.
Try Stomper Hyperion for a starting place. Then you can layer on some nice dirty sounding kicks.

That's if you want to go all custom and shiat.
Otherwise.... sample DJ Jean - The launch !!!1 LOL |
