| People that try to bring society back into the past, out of nostalgia or fear of the unknown. Unfortunately many of them forget that this and all countries pasts isn't all beautiful. Most Right Wing Conservatives try to force their religious and / or other views on the remainder of society, and are against scientific advances. |

Groups who identify themselves as conservative tend to vote Republican or Libertarian, and include
* Some libertarians or classical liberals who favor a laissez-faire economic system and limited government. They oppose the expanded role of government in America that came about during the New Deal and the Great Society.
* Religious and social conservatives, especially evangelical Protestants, observant Roman Catholics, and Orthodox Jews, who typically call for more government support for their form of traditional family values. They demand laws against abortion and gay marriage. (Catholics previously had opposed the sale of birth ccontrol devices.)
* Fiscal conservatives who demand lower taxes, reduced government intervention in the marketplace, and reduced regulation of business activities. They usually also condemn deficits and a large national debt.
* Supporters of a strong American presence in the world, with a superpower military. These include neoconservatives who support the use of American military power to promote democracy and defend American interests throughout the world.
* Isolationists who reject intervention in foreign wars, and are especially hostile to the United Nations.
* Supporters of states' rights.
* Opponents of "judicial activism" -- that is, judges making laws or overthrowing laws passed by the elected bodies. This anti-judicial position goes back to Thomas Jefferson. It was reflected by Abraham Lincoln's attacks on the Dred Scott decision of 1857. In 1910 Theodore Roosevelt broke with most of his lawyer friends and called for popular overturning of unwelcome decisions by state courts. President Franklin D. Roosevelt did not attack the Supreme Court directly in 1937, but ignited a firestorm of protest by a proposal to add seven new justices. The Warren Court of the 1960s came under conservative attack for decisions regarding redistricting, criminal rights, and abortion rights.
In the United States, many people who call themselves conservatives believe strongly in the Judeo-Christian social tradition and strict construction of the U.S. Constitution. The recent ascendancy of conservatism in the U.S. is attributable to several factors. Arguably, one of the most prominent of these factors has been the emergence of influential economists, politicians, writers, and media personalities whose work has helped shape public opinion. |

flimsy & un-bending definitions or labels are pretty pointless as far as im concerned. all political persuasions\' boundaries bleed into those around them, much like edm does ;) you can be socially liberal yet economically conservative. libertarian social theory is quite similar to some marxist thought etc.
its pretty irritating how americans tend to be unable to see beyond their specific liberal-conservative poles. life is more complicated than that. |

I started this thread because I've been called "a liberal" on this forum especially by Kapedan, yet I am for:
a) limited government & government spending.
b) tough on violent crime & support death sentence for serial killers.
c) go to church yet dont agree with legislating morality
d) tough on terrorism, however I think the current administration has lost it's credibility worldwide & lost the trust of Americans to conduct wiretapping without court orders, something I think the current administration will abuse against their political opponents in an election year.
e) think abortions should be reduced in demand!!! This issue has been way too politicized.
f) lower taxes as long as we are not in deficit spending |
