Hey guys,
I just built a new system...AMD 64 bit dual core 3800, 2 gigs of ram, 7800 GTX vid card, ASUS sli-ready mother board, etc. It's pretty damn impressive. But i'm trying to take advantage of using Windows XP x64 (an official verison) and I can't seem to update a lot of programs and drivers. Specifically, Zonelabs firewall won't download, neither will Antivir 7, or my NEC flat screen lcd display drivers. The errors I keep getting simply say that it's not compatible because they're still 32 bit. I"m not a computer whizz at all and my friend, who is, doesn't know what to do either. Is there any way to update it or do I just need to install an older version of Windows XP? We couldn't find solid answers on miscrosoft's webpage or anywhere else via google searches.
Thanks a lot! |

I'm pretty sure the drivers have to be made specifically for the 64-bit Windows XP.
You may also want to try this forum: Anandtech.com, since I've found it extremely helpful when I put my first machine together a year ago. |

You're going to need to find 64bit versions of those apps...
I would suggest going to each manufacurers' website to try and find the drivers... |

Don't bother with Windows XPx64 unless you can find drivers for everything you have.
On another note, Microsoft announced yesterday that Vista will not support EFI, so everybody cuddle up with their ol' Phoenix BIOSes now! |

I'm glad I don't know what that means or I'd be pissed off. |

Means you won't be able to run Vista on Apple's new Intel based hardware as previously thought possible. |

ok thanks guys, I appreciate it.
But this is just a software issue isn't it? Just because I have a dual core AMD 64 processor doesn't mean I can't still run a 32 bit version of Windows XP right? My friend says that would be "stupid" because I wouldn't be taking advantage of all that x64 has to offer. But if i'm going to constantly run into software and driver problems, then I"m not sure I want to bother with it. I'm only an average user...internet, school work and gaming. The latter is the reason I bought a high performance system in the first place.
thanks again. |

| Well what does your friend suggest instead of a 32-bit XP system? If you have compatibility issues then thats your only option. |

many programs don't even support 64-bit... let alone dual core...
edit: just for clarification... the games that don't support dual core, you'll just see your processor running at 50%, because the game only supports a single core. Some games, however, have patches out to support dual core.. |

well I was thinking that myself. Better just to run the standard version of XP professional rather than always be ing around with stuff. I'm not computer savvy enough to troubleshoot when he's not around...and he had no explanation on what to do when we ran into problems trying to install essential programs like my monitor drivers, firewall, antivir, etc. He thinks there has to be a way for everything to work since 64-bit is the way of the future...but it doesn't seem like that's feasible right now. |

True dat.
While it's 'cool' to have, you're left feeling like an idiot until the software catches up with the hardware (again)... |

ah...so this would apply to RAM then too? I have two 1gb at 533 installed...so even newer games won't take advantage of that? Almost every computer knowledgable person I talked to said dual core was the way to go for sure. Maybe not so? |
