No i'm not being defensive, and yeah i'm kind of assuming he's doing it for fun because he's not giving away the mix CD as a demo (because those are almost always done on equipment), he's using software and it's his first list. He seems to like the tunes he put on there, thus he wants to mix them together. If you are at your home, with some tunes you like, and are a newbie or hobbyist and not a club or "professional" DJ, it really shouldn't matter how you play. You should learn to have some direction in your tunes, which comes from studying tracklists and listening to sets, but that doesn't mean it has to always "build" per say. Sometimes it's just fun to play what you like if it's just you, your tunes and your equipment or software. The guys not playing for anyone but himself. He didn't ask us about these tunes for a party...thats all I'm saying, not trying to get into an argument, just trying to let you see my point of view on this. Not everyone is a professional DJ who needs to learn to build his sets, esp if they are just starting, as this guy is..with software...

Still, he asked for our opinions and I gave him mine. I don't see the problem here.

The critiquing of the mix is fine, I critiqued the other guys mix on another thread last night by fixing it up some because it flowed much worse then this guys. But you should also understand at the same time, people are just doing this for fun. Just trying to come to a "middle ground" on this, not saying i'm right and your wrong, or your right and i'm wrong, but merely making a point.

No problem at all, but look at it as him being a newbie, not someone who's looking to take this to the next level right away. You don't learn to build sets overnight, esp if it's your first mix. I've been working at this for years, and sometimes I try to build them up, sometimes I don't. It depends on the tunes you have and what your in the mood for doing. Serious practice seasons, or playing out at a club = trying to build it up, or establish some flow. Playing around with some software or hardware for the first time, or just wanting to play some your favorite tunes and "mix" them together = play what you like, because your only doing it for yourself, not a club.

I'm NOT trying to say you can't have your opinion either, but sometimes it's better to look at things not from a seasoned pro or someone who's been doing this for years, and look at it from him being a newbie at it.
RebeL9
if a pro doesn't give his advice then who should he learn from? some other newbie?

For the love of God, the guy asked for an opinion! What is your problem here?

Yeah but the guys not a pro, he stated he's a newbie, it's his first mix. At least give him some credit for trying...it doesn't have NO direction, it has some direction and flow, but i'll have to hear it for myself to know, but i know many of these tunes and it seems to work out fine to me....

No problem at all, just trying to make you guys look at it from a perspective of a newbie. Thats all!! Get in his shoes for once. If he said "is this a nice set to play out?" then it might matter, but he's doing this for the first time...
