Just set the notes down yourself. YOu have more control over notes and you have space for more Vst's, well more CPU |

Yeah, I hate pre programmed arps, they are crap imo. Just get a nice sounding synth and make your own! |

right, but midi-arpeggiators can make a good job too in my oppinion. you put the rythm of your arp with the base notes of your harmonies into your midi track. then you run it through a midi arp with a certain pattern you may define. you record the whole thing into another midi-track and then you start deleting notes and adding other notes around your harmonies.
I find it very difficult to write an arp from scratch in a pianoroll-style editor. I either do it on a traditional sheet of scoringpaper (the technical way) or i use tools like the above. Do you all have the arp in your head and just write it down? or do you take some bars, put it in a playback loop and start throwing in notes?
Another method I sometimes use is step-recording. You predefine a certain rythmic pattern and then you insert the notes from you midi-keyboard just in sequence. later you can use a rythmic quantize on it |

Step recording is a pain. And if you can write an arpeggio on paper, you sure as hell should be able to put it in a sequencer...
What's hard about it?
I come up with a pattern I like, either by playing it or just programming it, then apply it to my chord progression by copying and sliding.
I would have assumed that's how most people do it. |

There are a few decent freeware ones out there I've used. I think one is EnegyXT. Seems like I had latency issues though and never used it much. Go to KVR's website and search under VST arpegiators. If you upgrade to SX 3 you will get the ArpacheSX which is sweet. |

I don't know :) I assume thats how my brain works. I am really not so compatible to editing midi in a creative way with a mouse in the piano roll. |
