WOW, what a fun night.. where to start...
took off at 10pm heading to 5ive to be socialable with friends, chilled out there till 12:30ish maybe. then headed across the street to Fly. Got in pretty quickly, got upstairs to find Brent and Gaelen having drama in the DJ/ lightbooth with the smoke machine hehe, and maybe 20 minutes after i'd gone through coat check Dawyne Minard was finnishing up his set, and Deko-ze was just starting. so i packed my gear away in the light controll area, and went off to make the rounds. the Music was sooo good tonite. Deko-ze didn't play a typical Fly set, it was dark heavy, and full of thumpa thumpa. major hilight for myself was finally bein able to see how my fans look while spinning under black lights. Musical highlight for me was the end of thenight, where Micheal spun Camirsa: Let me Show you, follwed by Deko-ze + Xavier Pena: Pena's Groove, and endign the night off with Basement Jaxx Do your thing.
all in all, tonite was well worth the year long wait. hehe
Shout outs ov course to Bryan and Ronnie, always such a good time when we party, The Bakalas, Blake + Alex, and also to Brent ( the lighting Tech [ It takes two to Flag, 1 to spin, and one to work the lighting hehe]) and of course.....Deko-ze hehe.
Matt, Sarah, Sam + Lauren, Mark, was nice to meet you all, to any TA's i met but left out, im sorry. heheh
Overall 10/10
crowd 8/10 growing trend at the club i've been noticing that's starting to worry me a bit, is guys over partying, and gettin Fried to the point where they''ve got security trying to help them out of the main area, and they're resiting it, with a terrified look on their face. i've seen this three times in the last month...
Music 10/10
Venue 10/10 : Flys flys.. hehe |

cool to meet yourself and Bryan too...Sam and Lauren, always a pleasure!
a fun night indeed...arrived sometime before midnight, no lineup...not a typical Gallery/Guv/Cozo set from Deko-ze either as he's catering to a 99% gay crowd, but a very good set nonetheless...darker than normal and not as bangin'...haven't heard good stuff like that at Fly in a looooong time ;)
Fly is a great venue and I'd love to see them continue to bring in decent DJs on a regular basis.
booooo for running out of Stella though :p
time to attempt sleep... |

the goods:
- wasn't too busy
- dekoze had a long set
- it was fly and I saw people I hadn't seen in ages
- womens washroom downstairs was not disgusting, even at the end of the night
the bads:
- dancing near or actually IN someone's puke by the back bar
- a couple of the tangents dekoze went on musically
- that "show" at 3:30
- no techno :D
*waves to Mark*
Don't forget this, as discussed:

I also had one guy approach me who remembered my set from pride at guv last year! pretty hard to recognize someone you saw once, a year ago, in the dark corners of a place like fly...I was quite flattered!
One other thing I like about fly is the viewpoint into the booth. you might as well be in the booth with him. It's even better than aria. |

Yeah Deko-Ze! I had forgotten what great, classy gay house was..... It does exist! It is possible....
He did go off on some little grooveless, circuity tangets here and there which I certainly could have without, but for the most part spot on. Fly hasn't seen a DJ like that in ages... (and I also think it's the first time the turntables have been used for more than a CD holder in ages!)
Good to see you all out there.... (finally Mark!)

Hadn't been to Fly in over 6 months since the music usually sucks, but last night was good times. Wasn't the best set I have heard from Dekoze, but he does have to play to the crowd a bit, but the eye candy makes up for that. Hopefully Fly starts bringing in some more non circuit djs to make me interested in going back sooner.
Met a few TA's - you should venture outside of Fly - it really is much better music. till next time.... |

downloading now, review to follow ;)
Fly has changed...there's a distinct lack of energy in the air that used to exist even 3-4 years ago (I missed the true heyday of circuit which was even longer ago). I think it also helps to go there when one is single, lol.
still...good times. Deko-ze proved that there is still some decent tunes to be heard in a gay club.
I'd pay some serious coin to hear someone like Sander at Fly...every time I go back I remember what a fantastic (and underused) venue it is. |

When I first started going (August 2000), the music was heavy with commercial remixes, screaming diva...it sounds awful, but it worked. Only in that environment can I appreciate the intensity of an angry disillusioned black woman screaming about her man this, and her man that. Now, circuit music seems to be typified by drums drums drums, and it loses my interest so quickly. there's little to distinguish from one track to another. thankfully the music Saturday wasn't ALL tribal, but around 4:30 there was a big stint of it and that's when I started mentally packing up to leave.
I must commend deko-ze for whatever he did with that "love and happiness" track...followed by science department's "breathe" where he quickly sampled "rise up." yeeeeah!! |
