This might sound like a daft question, but please dont jump down my throat and say something like "trance comes from the heart..." or "trance is about individuality,..." blah blah!
I wondered what you guys think are the essential elements of a Trance track - i mean the bare bones, something a track cant do without to make it a fundamental 'trance' track.
You know what im talking about - tons of reverb, delay etc...
I bet you all have different ideas of what should be the structure of a basic trance sound.
Just wondered what your different ideas are...
Should be interesting?

I would guess many people will say supersaw :nervous:
but actually...in every track you hear a saw pwm wave in one way or other...
what more? a 4/4 beat...offbeat bassline + a rolling high bassline
can't think of more...someone elses' turn now... |

To me, it all comes down to the bass and percussions. |

Think about what the word Trance means ;) |

Pads play a heavy role in the emotional aspect of trance imo.
Offbeat open hats, clap hitting on beats 2 and 4.
Snare builds
Vocals about flying angels, oceans and s***. :) |

Why not just listen to trance and make up your own mind? |

But without anyone to tell me what trance is, how do I know whether I'm listening to it or not :D |

It has to put you in a trance or it's not trance!
This means lots of repetition at tempos around 140bpm. Has something to do brain waves or something. :toocool: Hmm....its a lot about adding on parts gradually and building up and releasing. Lots of repetitious vamping on pulsing type basslines with elements gradually added on. And ofcourse every effect and electronic sound under the sun is fair game. |

For me it would be (the BASICS):
- a kick
- a bassline (one could actually be sufficient)
- a hihat
- a clap
- a crash/swell
- a pad/string/choir
- a lead (supersaw or non-supersaw, but at least something that makes your climax different from your buildup - see < 2003 lol)
- some decent 'transitional' sound effects
And of course the MELODIES you make with them - that's what trance is all about I think. Not about complexities, sound effects, perfect production, blahblah ;)
Cheers,

You're gonna catch flak for the supersaws comment. |
