BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military said on Thursday it had launched its biggest air offensive in Iraq since the 2003 invasion of the country.

A military statement said the operation involving more than 50 aircraft and 1,500 Iraqi and U.S. troops as well as 200 tactical vehicles targeted suspected insurgents operating in Salahuddin, a province that includes Samarra, a town located 60 miles north of Baghdad.

“Initial reports from the objective area indicate that a number of enemy weapons caches have been captured, containing artillery shells, explosives, IED-making materials, and military uniforms,” the military said in a statement. IEDs are improvised explosive devices.

The mliitary said the operation began Thursday morning and was likely to continue for several days.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.

Sounds like a pretty major operation. Wonder why they didn't try this sort of tactic 12 months ago?

More weapons and more anti-occupation sympathizers will pour into iraq and make it more bloody. This is so great!!! Long live the american administration:rolleyes:

Is 50 aircraft really all that much? Sounds like this is more for show than to actually complete a specific mission objective.

Are the Navy Blue Angels in the Baghdad air show?

The operation is being run by the army!

I'd say 50 is quite a bit.

Sounds like they went out and deployed troops by air at strategic locations and if they saw anything out of the ordinary. A bit more impressive than just sending trucks, i guess.

With George Bush as commander in chief, we are certain to loose the war on terror. He's to stupid to be in charge of the U.S. military.
The only thing he's done right is prancing around an aircraft in a flight suit declaring "the war is over", and running up a giant debt.

Why doesn't he catch Bin Ladin?

This whole operation looks more like spying/infiltration operation into Iran, than something to do with Iraq.

I have the same feeling, although my first guess was that they were gonna strike Iran and this was a way to calm down the Iranians despite the huge militairy activity in Iraq (to say that this was an attack on Iraqi insurgence), oh well it might still come ;)

Really? Do you expect to win a war in 2 years? Whats going wrong in Iraq? Democracy is being build, people have voted, soon the Iraqi millitary will take over. We are in there for a long terms. Id rather have Bush in here then Kerry or Clinton, because both of them are weak, and honestly I dont see any good democrats that can do a better job then Bush right now. Democrats are weak when it comes to foreign policy, and I hope we dont get a Democrat in office next term, because we will be doomed, but I hope I'm wrong.
