Can you guys suggest a good set of (relatively inexpensive) monitor speakers...or perhaps will a decent stereo amp and a set of bose satellite speakers will be good enough?
Please consider that I am just starting out so top of the line gear is not necessary. I'm going for "best bang for the buck" setup.
I will be using them with my laptop running logic audio / reason /etc... and also to plug in my DJ gear (whenever I buy it).

Thanks,
djdawn
I'm using a normal amp with JBL control 1 X-Treme speakers. They are not capable of producing "club" volume, but have very clear sound and good value.

Thanks DJ Dawn, one more question about the amp... How many watts is "enough"?

Thanks,
djdawn
anything from 50 "real" watts is enough, unless you use a monitor with 15" bass speakers;)

btw, check for monitor speakers with built-in amps, that may be another option. I'd say spend about 250$ to get decent sound. I prefer to have good mids and high frequencies when mixing, pounding bass isn't that important (at home).

I got a set of Merak MB6's, and a Merak 8" sub. Now, the speakers cost $200 and the sub is $300, only avaliable from radioshack. Now, they are actually VERY good, don't dismiss them because they're from radioshack. I also have a nice Kenwood 400 watt amp, I got at futureshop for $250. the setup can go very loud, and the bass, surprisingly, is very good for an 8". If you want top of the line (for home setup), I would go for a pair of cerwin vega 12's for $700.. or 10's for $500 (futureshop prices).

just found another one which looks perfect (for my needs). But it's 399$ a pair.

save some money and buy a good pair of powered monitors...the type you should buy depends on what type of music you'll be producing...i hear & read that the new yamaha ms10s (is that what they're called) are excellent monitors....biamplified, extreme flat frequency, crystal clear highs and lows, near field monitors
