Long rides = Big V6 or V8, medium to large sedan would be perfect for you... especially since you might road trip it to Montréal from NYC.

In that respect, you can get amazing deals on one year old American cars, almost half the retail price with remaining manufacturer warranties and possibility to buy extended ones.

Thanks Malek. And definitely plan on road-tripping it at least once a month :p But American? Is it simply because of the bigger engine? Are they reliable at all? And how much would something like what you proposed cost me? Finally, any brands in particular that you'd recommend?

The thing is you can't say GO all the way with GM, or BUY Ford only... like any other brands, models are built in different plants using different processes... so its a model/year thing, you have to read about it.

Pricewise, in the US cars are less expensive, especially american ones. Anywhere between 15 and 20k ? Depending on the intrest rate on your loan , it might be even cheaper to buy brand new because US Manufacturers give you something called 0% loans :p and most of the time with a 1000$ additional reduction because you're a student/graduate.

Since I don't have a licence, have never driven, know absolutely zilch about cars, and clearly, need to get one before I begin my job, I need some help to get started. Should I buy, lease, or lease with possibility of buying? New or used? American, German, Japanese? What brand? I'm lost. And yes, I'm 27. Laugh away :D

Nick you must be kidding

if you want my advice
Japanese are the ones that last longer and keeps a good value for reselling

Toyota, Honda, Nissan
go for that
magikb
I did not know you didn't know how to drive :p

anyhow.. my opinion... if you are gonna buy a car.. do not lease if you are driving distance.. like previously stated you will spend a load in costs for going over the km's.. I think it is up to about 8 cents/km over and it only gives you about 20k km/yr to work with.

Also, I wouldn't buy anything brand new. If you buy even 1 year older you are already saving a good 2000$-4000$ in freight and such being brand new.. a year old is good cuz most times you will still have warranty on the car up to about 60,000km I think for GM products (not sure about anything else cuz I have only ever drivin Chev :D, which I can say I have gotten 5 years out of one and am on year 3 with my second now) One thing with buying an American vehicle is that your parts and such to fix are a lot cheaper than having to possibly get them imported if you buy something non-American, so that is something to think about as well.

One thing that I will tell you though.. Kia's offer a 5 year warranty with full roadside and everything, so that may be something that you want to consider as well. And I have heard a number of good things about Kia as well.

I don't think it matters with what type of car you are buying.. I think you can always get a lemon out of the deal being new or not. But if you do buy used there are places online where you can pay to get the full background report on the previous owners and if the auto has been in accidents or not as well. Make sure that you find someone who knows something about cars to go with you or do your reseach fully before getting one.

Good luck and happy auto shopping Nick! :)
