Hey guys, im in need of a little help. I'm mainly a trance dj and have been for quite some time now. I love trance, But now i have been putting alot of my time into working towards producing it, i have all the software, and a couple vst's. But there questions i still have and will have eventually. But my main question or problem if you will is that i just cant come up with a melody to start a song. I mean after i get off work im either on my tables or reading up on tutorials on producing. or working with fl studio, ableton live or reason just trying and experimenting with different things. is there any advice you can give on creating melodies, am i headed in the right direction as far as just to keep reading and learning?

| Buy yourself a midi controller or maybe a midi keyboard and then u will get some ideas in ur mind without knowing where these ideas came from :D ;) Then keep experementing on the controller or keyboard and u will come ond day with a good melody |

Sometimes I'll come up with melodies while listening to other songs... You could pretend you're adding another instrument to some other song and use that as the basis for your melody.
Or just start with a chord progression of your own, as putting one together is almost math. Very little inspiration needed to come up with a chord progression, even if it's just played strait off the piano, because it either sounds right, or wrong. There are always varying degrees, but we're talking about getting started on a melody. |

Hey thats not a bad exercise to practice, just loop parts of songs and jam out on the midi keyboard to get ideas going. |

| i can come up with chord prossesions but where do i go from there as far as creating an arpeggio/melody. just keep experimenting. is it a good idea to play around with remixing before i start trying to create my own tune or just keep experimenting. |

You do learn things when you use midi files from other tracks, you can see how the original artist played it and it can always work as inspiration.
I'm with some of the other posters with regards to keyboard and you should really try and teach yourself to play some other peoples stuff as it will serve as inspiration to your own.

That comment has made me curious , could you please explain to me what mean when you say chord progresions are like maths?

well there are only a certain number of ways you can play a chord progression, so i guess that's what he means. like when you start in that key well then basicaly you have just eleminated what you can and cant play theory wise. |
