Different Mixing Styles. Help wanted.

I am at a roadblock with my attempt at being a closet dj. Maybe you can help?
Hmm, how to put this into words.. which style is more 'preferred'?
Is it better to let the simple drum/bass beats and claps intro part of the incoming track play, and build up gradually to the melody?
The way I've been doing it is pretty much mix in the 'meaty' parts of track after track, and have the occasional hands-in-air or whatever breaks. This seems to create a lot of NRG and also burns through alot of traxx really fast. But when does it become too much and backfire? I mean, if it's constantly banging, wouldn't it drain the audiences faster?
So, this is long and windy, but what do you think? I am sure you've heard both styles in real life before. What are the pros and cons of them? Are there any general rules to not be too boring but not too 'intense' either?
Both will lose audiences no doubt.
Thanks. |

Lol, replying to myself. I am restless today.
Don't you hate it when you listen to all these tracks and get these crazy ideas of mixing this and that together... then you fire up your fav mixing program to do it only to find out you've got the idea, but not the skills?! ....Argh it's driving me insane! It's like all this pend up ideas that need expressing but get no instant gratification!
Sigh, I am gonna shove two pencils up my nose and bang against the desk repeatedly until these ideas go away. dammit.
Sorry.

Just mix according to your mood and style.... I cannot basically tell you what style to approach, but somehow you have to know when to drop the incoming track onto the outgoing track..... For, example you cannot simply drop in the incoming track when the outgoing track is approaching a second climax.... ( too much incoming and outgoing... I'm going diZZzzzyyy...@#%??)
Anyways, I always built my set slowly ...... and then after warming up, I'll let go a few high energy track... and then I'll decide when to let Hell Break Loose ( ..according to your own accessment...) and then I let the mood go down smoothly not abruptly.( This have to based on your own track selection.) And then repeat itself... with a bigger climax the next time....
This is how I do it... everyone has their own way of doing it. I do know if you are asking for this but I'll just give anyways....
