Approach to Electronic Music

| I'm really curious about people's approach to this music. I see that some people approach music differently on here. Some people "seem" to me at least..to approach certain productions, remixes or electronic music in general from a clubber, dancing perspective, how it goes down on the dance floor. Others approach it from a musical/compositional, and others from a listener and listening perspective, is this something I can jam to, something I can listen to and enjoy? Something that is musical or artistic? I know i'm a little bit of everything, but more from the listener perspective. Certain stuff I can generally say is "dance floor" material, other stuff is both listening and dance floor, and still others is pure listening music, other stuff is just experimental stuff that I wouldn't say is for either (esp some IDM). I'm just curious about how you tend to approach music on TA, whether it's trance of course, or techno, house, drum n' bass, breaks, or whatever it is? |

I am mostly a trance listener (epic/ some psy/ progressive). I also listen to breakbeats, video game music, and am branching out to techno.
I've NEVER set foot in a club (because there are never any where I live). I've never danced in my life other than in the privacy of my headphones and basement.
However, I recognize EDM for what it's worth. Therefore ALL are important to me in this order:
1. Musical...
2. Listener's...
3. Dancer's... |

Breakbeats/breaks trance
Trance - Any and all forms epic/prog/Hard/psy/listener/dancers/x poppin junkies :crazy: :crazy:

Hard Rock
Rap (Only the underground kind MTV)
Heavy Metal
Classic rock
Classical Music - Bethoven/Bach/Mozart eh' not so much
Certain Operas - Im 22 and last i heard was like 4 years ago

oh ya and as far as clubbing goes havent been in a year our clubs only stay open for summer :(. But ya id go.
But what i really like is travelin to see MAJOR DJs' which i cant do often cuz i ain't got no money. |

Awesome, well here is my list...
Trance (mostly melodic trance, can be "epic" or "progressive" but I think lately it's more "progressive" and that is what I typically have been drawn to since the beginning)
Ethereal Ambient/Downtempo or "Chill Music" (stuff like Ulrich Schnauss, Cafe del Mar series, Enigma, Delerium, Royksopp, Tangerine Dream, Enya, Jean Michel Jarre)
Breaks (Mostly into progressive/trancey breaks now, but I also am fond of electro and nu skool breaks)
House (Funky, vocal, progressive and electro house, Kaskade, Sander K, John Digweed)
Singer-songwriter Pop/Rock (John Mayer, Michelle Branch, Sarah McLachlan, David Gray, old Nelly Furtado)
Jazz (Louis Armstrong is one of my favorites)
Soul/R&B
Progressive, classic, psychadelic and alternative rock
Classical and Romantic (I'm taking an Understanding Music course at my college) |

| Before I discovered trance, I never had much interest in music in general. Once every month or two I'd pop in one of my mom's phil collins records.. but that's it really. Never listened to the radio, never purchased CDs or vinyl, never searched for anything online. I'd head little tidbits of what I thought was called techno here and there, and I knew I liked some aspects of it, but it was mostly just cheesy commercial stuff. I eventually found this stuff through the internet, and since then I'm listening to music all the time. I don't do clubs or party much, I listen to music while jogging. I primarily value the atmosphere and the energy. I've been a trance lover from the start and always will be. My tastes have since expanded to some melodic/proggy house, tech trance and psy. But I never really liked techno or stuff that isn't very melodic or atmospheric. |

Yeah I never go to clubs, but once I turn 21 I may go to them more, but it's no fun going alone. I went to a few in the past, but hardly any of them have really been into the music. I haven't found many people yet who'd go with me, who are into it. I'de much rather go with someone who shares the same passion for the music, but if I ever meet a girl who doesn't but just wants to go out and have a good time, i'de be more then happy to take her... |

Exactly, the same with me. I went from being into really mainstream electronic stuff, everything from Daft Punk & Basement Jaxx, to Moby and the Prodigy. I was into Enigma, Enya and Delerium too, because I loved the "ethereal" and "heavenly" nature of there stuff (I grew up listening to Enya, my dad played her music all the time). I eventually heard some Techno at the DEMF the first year, and this was a broadcast on TV, I didn't actually go there, even though I live like 30 to 40 minutes from Detroit. I was quite young at the time, 13. I eventually found trance when I turned 14, on the internet in the summer.
Since then I've really enjoyed it, mostly the melodic variety, everything from early BT, and PvD and Robert Miles, to Armin, Ferry, Tiesto, and went through a cheese phase for a while (haha DJ Sammy, Ian van Dahl, mixed in with some cheesy "hard" stuff), but then I got big into epic trance. These past two years i've gotten into deeper, more progressive stuff, and rediscovered old sounds, as I was into progressive stuff back around 2000 and 2001, like Dave Seaman, Sasha & Digweed and Nick Warren. So now i'de say I like stuff that is a mixture of progressive and epic, the more progressive melodic variety, like some of the tunes in my sig, and breaks too, and a little bit of vocal, electro and funky house. Sander K is what got me into that sound, and a guy I talk to who used to be on TA introduced me to progressive breaks...I've always been into the melodic stuff though, and will always be a listener, even if I start going to clubs again... |

I listen to electronic cause I like it. And that's it, there's no rocket science behind it.
I go clubbing/to the outdoor parties ocasionally (about once in 2 or 3 months) and it's cool, but i used to enjoy it more. It's nothing remarkably special now.
I can listen at home to quiet ambient stuff or fast-paced banging techno made for the clubs, and enjoy both. |

hmm... interesting question.
When I listen to different types of EDM (or music in general)I guess I do have a different outlook depending on what it is. Primarily I think I enjoy trance, mostly because of the feeling that it conjures deep inside of me, more of a listener perspective. Most genres do not present such a complicated, intricate melody that really makes you become involved emotionally and physically. Especially with hard house, NRG and Hard Trance I feel they urge to dance, and exert energy. Psy trance also makes me want to dance because it has so many elements and and always a deep sub audio bass line that keeps you listening intently.
I guess when I listen deep house, soulful house, vocal and other types I really don't feel the same way. I become more of a compositional listener and frankly I don't have any real qualifications to make such judgements which in a way I'm thankful for. Music is meant to be enjoyed not picked apart and analyzed, but that's just my opinion.
I believe to expience an optimum level of harmony in music, one has to become immersed deeply on all angles. Trance best enhances my mental and spiritual desires and also makes me want to dance. |
