WASHINGTON — About 300,000 pieces of children's jewelry are being recalled by Reebok International Ltd. because of the danger of lead poisoning that killed one child, the U.S. government said Thursday.

It was not immediately known if the recall applied to Canada. The company's North American website highlighted the recall on its posting for the United States, but not on the sections for Canada and Mexico.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the silver-coloured, heart-shaped charm bracelets were recalled by Reebok, a unit of Germany's Adidas-Salomen AG, after a four-year-old child swallowed one of the bracelets and died of lead poisoning.

"I want to assure all of our consumers and our retailers that I will do everything in my power to ensure that no other family, no other child, suffers a similar tragedy," Reebok president Paul Harrington said in a statement.

The 20-centimetre-long metal bracelets and charms have the name "Reebok" engraved on the side of the charm. The bracelet was provided as a free gift with the purchase of various styles of children's footwear at major shoe stores in the U.S. from May 2004 through March 2006.

Is it just me, or should the kid not have eaten the braclet either? Where were the kids parents? Don't kids stop putting everything in their mouths by the time they're four? (sorry if I sound heartless... just playing "devil's advocate")

OH !! I've been eating those bracelets like candy... I just can't get enough of the all-natural metalic flavour!

On a more serious note... It's a company's responsibility to manufacture products that are completely safe to release to the public. LEAD is well known to be unsafe.. especially as a charm bracelet for children! If a company must make a product like this, they need to warn consumers of possible hazards.

example: Plastic bag is not to be used as toy.
or my favourite: Caution contents are HOT! (on the side of coffee cups now)
or in this case: Lead bracelet should not be used as food or food supliment.

Face it.. 90% of people are just plain stupid. Companies need to cover their asses...
