Review: DJ Trace 3/24

Whereas I'm still waiting to see the review of Rivera and Baez... I think I'll post a little review of my own, regarding our very own NYTA DJ Trace that spun at... Crush... last night.

First off let me say that I hadn't been to Crush before last night and that venue was quite possibly one of the most horrible suprises that I had ever experienced. It's closer to a bar or lounge than a club, the sound blows, the equipment looks like it was made for a Soviet DJ in the early 1970s. Moreover, the crowd was abyssmally bad, with retarded hip-hop fans that were angrily sitting on couches the entire night. Oh, and the guy that was wearing headphones and listening to his I-Pod and making ghetto hand motions in response to what only he was hearing while the DJs were spinning was so offensive that I wanted to beat him with a baseball bat. This crowd was so damn bad that I found myself wishing for Guidos and FOBs to be there. Ugh... never going to a teen club again...

Now that that unpleasant detail is out of the way, let us discuss the music! First of all, DJ Trace had a fantastic track selection and played a combination of very popular trance songs and some interesting remixes that would be appreciated by most crowds. Indeed, he got a large segment of the crowd dancing and cheering loudly when he droped a rather interesting remix of a rap song (ID?) and even more people going when he played the Cosmic Gate remix of Ferry's Punk.

Unfortunately, the first few transitions seemed to be a bit off, as if the beatmatching wasn't perfect. I got up into the booth to see what was going on, and it seemed that Trace was unused to the ancient equipment and was having a bit of a hard time that led to a trainwreck between 'Float Away' and 'Ghost'. After a while though, he seemed to get the hang of it, and both the transitions and the overall mixing became a great deal smoother.

DJ A.K.'s final thoughts:

1) Don't ever go to Crush.

2) DJ Trace, while new on the scene (this was his first time spinning in a Manhattan club), is definately a force to be reckoned with and is certain to get much better and much more famous as time goes on.

3) The next time he plays in a more reputable club, perhaps opening for someone, I'd reccommend that you guys show up give moral support, perhaps technical tips, and most of all, enjoy the music.

Yeah I heard horrible things about it as well. Sorry it was a bust :(

I don't know if it was a 'bust', as Trace was pretty good, it's just that everything else seemed to have conspired against him.

Haha dude that club was a mess , they said a pionner system and i get there and some shytie Denon system and i had all mp3 file cds I had to go home bak to BK and burn cds and in come all the way back i was running cause all my friends where there waiting for me to get on and when I got on , my mixing @ frist was messed up cause i was so stressed out but they I had to come threw most of the crowd was all my friends buggin out to what i was playing - nice meetin A.K he was chillin with me in the booth rockin out & andre & DJ nectra , all the hip hop over there killed the party and they only let me spinn like 45 mins i got paid but still i wanted more time .

That crowd wasn't for me either , like all my friends like 25 of them where all buggin out but the other people there was like not into it some girl came up and asked me if i can play sean paul I laughed @ her and i was naaaa ! they didnt even let Dj nectra spinn it was stupid and I heard from the promoters that its gonna be a house trance night no hip hop , what ever though i had some fun my friends had fun I went to a sick after party and im still there hehe : )

I droped a few interesting tracks , I started the set out with Robbie Rivera - Float Away (Gabriel & Dresden Re-Edit) which got the crowd moving and people went crazy when i droped Jfk - good god etC , so for my frist club i had some fun , but when i do some more serious with a club packed with a trance crowd and im not stressed out from rushing home for in cds then my set would be perfect !

that night was a sort of a bitch but thanks to my friends it was sick when i finally got there , even if the people on here dont go to teen clubs just tell your kids to stay away lol from Crush

Thanks A.K for the review & the support hehe

Hahaha man, I'm cracking up.... Dude I've had almost the same exact thing happen to me. A local friend of mine who puts together parties (mostly guido Jersey scene stuff) teamed up with two other guys and through this party @ some club called Remix, I forget where in the city it was. The place could fit about 200-300 people. So get gets 65 people from Jersey together and rents a charter bus so we all could go in together. Naturally we all got trashed on the bus. So they had hip hop in the bigger room, and his friend spinning trendier progressive stuff in the other room. The hip hop DJ was good, I hate hip-hop, but the dude could spin. The other guy was awful, he played CDs and had no concept of mixing. Now there was probably 150 people at the place, almost half being our crew. So the party was supposed finish at 3. At 2:00 they were gonna close the small room, and let me close out the main room for the last hour.

To so sum it up, this hip-hop DJ is like refusing to stop playing, I get in a shoving match with one of his friends, all hell almost breaks loose. This group of like 6 homies all get up in my face, then like all our friends stop what they're doing and run over, the ing homies realize they're outnumbered about 50 to 10 and after a half hour of that I finally get to start playing. Naturally they had the worse equipment I've ever seen, I forget what the mixer was, but it was awful, and the booth monitor looked like it was from 1963 and sounded like my clock radio.

What do you mean by "homies?"
DJ A.K
Hahaha, Rob, that sounds like a blast! Then again, I think I need to find this club that you are speaking of, so as to introduce it on the boards as a viable alternative to Cascada at Webster Hall... :D
