FX on atmospheres

| So my problem is not with actually creating the atmosphere, but what types of effects to use on it. I know flangers and blah blah blah, but reverb is what is killing me. Should I use a very wet reverb (80% wet) or what? I'm just confused on how to really get it to sound really surreal, in the background and lush. Also messing around with sweeps and the liking, what are some basic reverb settings to use to keep it sounding in the background. Stereo imagers are also used very often, it's just...how do you create that lush, background sound? |

Layering fx is good for this. But note the order is crucial for different fx e.g. phaser then delay just repeats a static phasered sample, but phaser on the delay does exactly that.
Try using a reverb then phaser (sparingly) then add a nice delay over this. Keep it all subtle and build up the layers like this. Prehaps using another synth run to the same FX Buss

Sometimes a good lonnngggg reverb (5 second +) can be really really great on a an ethereal sounding pad.
BUT!
You want to go subtle with reverb that long! Sending only a little signal to your LONG reverb is good. Because if you keep your pad at a low volume, and your reverb low and "distant" you can get some nice effects of depth.
Keep experimenting with it. But generally 80% can be rather harsh. That's too wet for my taste. Instead of inserting a reverb ON the track with your pad/FX sound, it's much easier to layer depth, by making more than just one pad/FX sound, and then sending all of those pad/fx sounds to the same LONG subtle reverb FX track.
Then EQ as you desire. Most "natural" reverbs don't have a lot of low end, and not much sparkle, so try do some low-shelf cutting, and high shelf-cutting to give it a more mid-rangey sound.
Anyway. That's all the advice I could pull off the top of my head. And as with ALL creative endavours, there's more than one way to skin a cat!

| Well for the reverb I tend to route all my pads/fx/sweeps and those sounds to a send with just a reverb on it and then I roll off at 200hz and roll off around the 14khz area depending. Just looking for some extra ideas on how to create some really cool atmospheric sounds. Keep the replies coming we could turn this into a neat help thread. |

Delay, Flanger, Crystellizer are often used by me..
Sometimes things like flanged delays into reverb with another send going to a different delay, bus the whole lot back together with the original and then crystelize the lot (Just looked at the FX chain on the track I'm working on right now)
Not sure what VSTs do the crystellizer thing (I use a hardware unit for it). I think sound toys produce an RTAS plug that does it.. Neat effect. |

I may be stupid, but what does it do?? SOunds like a combo of pitshift, delay, gated reverb?? |

| Pitsch shifty forward and reverse delay thingy.. Still trying to find a VST equivalent. I thought pluggo might, but no dice.. |
