your opinions on mp3 - ruining or improving music as a whole?

im writing an essay about mp3 technology.
my main question i will be tackling is whether mp3's will/have ruined or made music better.
im taking into account the fact that industry suffers due to piracy so big corperations responsible for boy/girlbands are not getting as much gain out of manufacturing pop e for the meatheads of the world.. therefore you see less e making money..
however the good stuff also suffers..
but the artists who dont do it for the money will still make music of the same quality..
plus a lot more people can get their music heared.. a lot of it is so that is a downside..
its going round and round in my head and id like to through a few comments and points others have on the subject..
lets hear what you think of the matter!

| I think that mp3s have helped. Hell, I know they have. I live in a small, rural area. Guess how much EDM is available here? When I first got into trance, I downloaded some from p2p clients. I enjoyed the music so much that I have since purchased numerous trance CDs and vinyls. Had I not been able to sample the music, I probably would have never bought any. In my case, mp3s made money for the artists and labels. However, I am sure that for every purchase I have made, someone has just kept an illegal download. There's something to be said for having the physical medium. I like to have the CD so that I can rip the music to my hard drive and back it up in addition to simply having the mp3. |

exactly - and downloading live sets - thats where i get 99% of my trance music from. if it werent for that, id still be ignorant to the world of EDM, and I'd be another mindless consumer. I still am, but on less of a scale :D |

I would have never know of trance if it wasn't for my friend who downloaded mp3s off of Kazaa way back in the day.
My favorite DJ back in the day wasn't PVD or Oakenfold, but actually DJ Doboy. Although his mixing sucked at times, I still really like the songs he played. The only way you really could get his mixes was through downloading mp3s. I think the digital medium allows for unknown artists to get their work out into the public for exposure. |

| its ruining the quality of sound though because people are no longer producing for cd or vinyl they are producing for mp3 which sounds like . .wavs are worthwhile but .mp3's ruin the sound quality and lead to an impression that its the way music should sound. I personally don't particulary like mp3 and think that it is ruining the quality of music presentation. |

| As long as it doesnt kill the vinyl aspect of the music, I think any form is good for the growth of the music. What I download on mp3 are mostly other peoples mixes for listening pleasure. Its a great way to share your product. Vinyl will still be my medium of choice no matter how "obsolete" it gets. |

It ruins "music" for the big executives, what i mean is the people at the big corporate labels like sony arent able to push their commercial crap on everyone anymore.
Consumers now have choice, ive found so much music using the internet and p2p i never knew existed. Of course the big labels and the RIAA dont want people to learn about other music they just want to push their commercial crap and make money.
Musicians have also benefited by p2p, most of the cds i own i wouldnt have bought if i hadnt been exposed to simmilar music on the internet. Also, musicians gain popularity by the exposure on p2p, and as i'm sure most people are aware they often make far more money at gigs than off cds.
Just my thoughts :) |

nic - your comments are good. i like the idea that mp3 gives power back to the people. - its almost like mp3 has taken the music industry to a more underground level.
im not really interested in whether mp3 ruins quality. i care about quality but the vast majoity do not. most wouldnt tell between a 192 and a cd audio file like wav..
keep the comments coming. what do you all think about the corperation issues? will it be good that they continue to loose sales?

lol I was also introduced to trance illegally. I stole some money which I used to buy a comp called Club mix 2000. Yes, I got in trouble for stealing but it was worth it. |
