| what program do u use to convert avi file to ipod format? |

i find itunes to be the most useless program ive ever used. Not only can i not convert avi to mp4, but when i connect my ipod to another computer, it automatically erases everything previously in my ipod. I refuse to pay $50 for programs that should rightly come with my $500 ipod.
Apple ed up big time all in the name of their own greed. |

Video playback: MPEG-46 SP with B-Frames with stereo sound. Near DVD quality up to 720x480 @ 30 f/s (NTSC), 720x576 @ 25 f/s (PAL), AVI file format. WMV9 (including protected files) up to 352x288 @ 30 f/s, and 800 KBit/s2. |
What diff does it make when you play moves like that, and the screen is only 220x176?
At least the iPod displays 320x240(TV quality). No mention of divx, or xvid either(which most people will play). |

the above program wont work. says i have conflicting cygwin files but i cant seem to locate the second file i supposedly have.
Oh well, no movies for me until i can get a good hacked program. As i said, im willing to pay my fair share for games, files and music. But i refuse to pay extra for something my ipod should already do. |

You'll find that if you deal with the actual customers that own these things, about 95% of them use only stuff from iTunes because that's all they know. Apple didn't up, they did damn well. Only power users would want something otherwise. I'm the same way.
However, Jay, you paid for the iPod and it does what it says it does. Plays the advertised video file formats. Nothing more, nothing less. You got what you paid for. If you want it to go above and beyond, you've got to pony up a bit more. Same with the warranty stuff. You paid for the iPod, not the warranty. I love it when people bitch about that.
By the way, how does everybody feel about the Creative Zen Vision:M, their iPod Video killer? |

the ones i want to convert are the ones i filmed myself with my video camera, and digital camera which i should have every right to do. Also, if i already bought the dvd i shouldnt have to rebuy it again for another format. Thats just ludicris. |

the question is why does Apple iPOD even need its own proprietary file format.. ?
$$$
Just like VERTiG0 said, the general public won't bother looking beyond the packaging. It's all one big marketing game, and given how ubiquitous those iPODs are, sadly Apple is winning.
anyways .. i've always found this to be a rather good site..
