Howdy I have a question for you guys?
I am thinking about moving to Montreal for about half a year to learn French. I am just nearly finished college and have decided to take a break from Toronto, plus I have always wanted to learn French.
If you guys could be so kind as to answer a few questions for me...
Is half a year a satisfactory duration of time to at least get the basics down of French, I know this is a stupid question but maybe some of you have gone throughh the same?
Which part of Montreal would be the best for me to live in considering my situation?
My apartment will be completely paid for but the rest I have to cover, what are the chances of me finding a job? I studied to go into Marketing and as nice as that would be, to tell you the truth a full time job at a coffee shop or a place where Ill get to communicate with people will be more than satisfactory.
Thanks alot ahead of time. |

If you totally immerse yourself in the language you'll learn it in about a year. I have a friend who moved to Montreal from the States to do the same thing and after a HALF YEAR she became perfectly bilingual. She did, however, have a french bf, a french group of friends and went to a french school.
Taking this into consideration, yes, a year and a half should be long enough.
Regarding the section... hmmmm... I'd recommend Outremont, the majority of people living there are french....
There are 89273627532 million cafes in Montreal, I doubt finding a job at one will be difficult. |

half a year is tight to learn a language... but it could be done if you move in an area where people are mostly french, stay away from concordia/mcgill ghettos and westmount...
jobs? bah, it depends which kind... but clothing/restaurants/cafes are always hiring, not the best paying, but you could interact with the people and learn better. |

Marcus thanks alot for the info you have provided. Is Outremont a bit on the upscale side? Im not saying I am posh or anything, but I would rather not have to be worried about my car or anything else, or is this something I should even be worried about in Montreal?
Zeiter. It took me a while to finally decide on Montreal. It was between Quebec city, Montreal or actually going to Europe. After some serious thinking Montreal seems like the best option for now.
Malek. Im not too concerned about finances. I mean it would be cool to make some money but its not what Im going there for, any money I make will be strictly party money :) . What is more important to me is as you mentioned "interacting with the people".
thx alot for the help guys |

| good sugguestion with Laval Jay.. I got lost coming and going from Montreal to Laval for the F1 in 2004. Laval does not speak any english at all from what I gathered. I couldn't find anyone to help give me directions back to my hotel. So it is just about 15-20 min outside of Montreal but would be a great place to learn. |

Oh don't live in Laval or the south shore... its boring and you won't live the Montreal experience... its as if you live in Mississauga or some other suburb. |
