McCain: Russia deserves ‘harsh treatment’
Senator says U.S. should respond harshly to Russia’s anti-democratic moves

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain said Sunday the United States should respond harshly to Russia’s anti-democratic actions and suggested that President Bush is reconsidering his assessment of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After meeting Putin for the first time in June 2001, Bush said he had been able to gain “a sense of his soul” and had found Putin to be “very straightforward and trustworthy.”

Recalling Bush’s assessment just months after taking office, McCain said: “Look, we all say things that are stupid. ... I’m sure that the president has re-evaluated his position in light of Putin’s recent actions.”

McCain, R-Ariz., added: “Look, the president wanted to develop a good working relationship with Russia and with Putin, and I’m sure that the president has re-evaluated his position in light of Putin’s recent actions. At the time I think he was—remember, it was early in his presidency, the president was trying to develop a good relationship with Putin. ...

“I don’t mean stupid. I’ll say it was stupid as far as I’m concerned, but all of us make statements that are sometimes not correct in hindsight.”

McCain, a possible presidential contender in 2008, said Putin has repressed Russians and their media, supported Belarus’ authoritarian president and not cooperated with the U.S. in dealing with Iran’s suspected development of nuclear weapons.

“I think that we’ve got to respond in some way,” McCain told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “The glimmerings of democracy are very faint in Russia today, and so I would be very harsh.”

McCain has urged Bush not to attend the Group of Eight summit of industrial nations in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July.

Last week Bush said he was concerned with Russia’s crackdown on internal dissent but would still attend the summit. “I haven’t given up on Russia,” he said.

+ infinity is more like :whip:! :p

if people think bush is doing something "unconstitutional" and/or immoral, people should just look at putin. i know the politics of the region extremely well and this guy is worse than sadam. he plays with people so bad it's pathetic. oil prices go up and he makes little reforms to make it seem like he's helping people yet at the same time he's REALLY thinking about changing the constitution and running a third term. i really hope Kasparov (the genious that he is) and the opposition party will be able to unite to bring down this fascist piece of ing . i hope the people of his nation deficate all over his unholy grave.

Yeah, putin is bad news.

I don't know much about McCain, I'm gonna read up on him, and if he does run for president, I might have to vote for him.

Sometimes I think he'd make a pretty good president (especially for a Republican) but he does seem pretty "out there" sometimes. If he's going to run for the presidency in 2008 (I've got no doubt that he will) he might want to consider toning it down a little if he doesn't want to come across as another slightly unhinged, Howard Dean-esque firebrand who shoots off at the mouth without really thinking about what he's saying. I mean, he may be right about Putin's authoritarianism, but there are better, more diplomatic ways to express yourself than this. I don't think he's going to get Putin to budge by calling Bush's earlier praise of him "stupid" or by urging the US's boycott of a large, multilateral summit. How does he honestly think these comments are likely to come across?

"What we saw in that interview was the death of McCain the Maverick, and the birth of McCain the Chameleon. If there was any doubt that McCain is--with his eye on a presidential bid--a politician to the core, this interview should snuff that doubt out..."

I agree with 99% of what you said... the truth of the matter is that Putin is a brilliant strategist - I have to give him that. All the years of KGB training are finally paying off. He will get his 3rd term. All of the nonsense that he's openly goes on record and says he won't run for 3rd term (as if it already was an option offered by the RF constitution!) - but Putin's word is as reliable as a 30 year old Zhiguli (russian car) with all its original parts.

What he did over the years of his presidency was nothing short of brilliant. Watch the man closely or he'll pull a fast one on you too:

1. He takes control of the media

2. He gets rid of the people who oppose him

3. He starts toning down on "democracy" and changes the laws to virtually outlaw opposition

4. He kicks out foreign interests that are not in line with his vision

5. He makes contribution to opposition illegal

6. He takes control of oil company that was about to sell huge stake to American/western company that would jeopardize Russia's oil supply

7. He makes a total farce of constitution and demonizes political rival as a petty criminal (Khodorkovskiy) - creating a modern day "enemy of the state" incarnate

8. He implements rules that bypass democratic process and further his agenda. The governors are now not elected by the people but selected by Putin

9. He is not shy to take brides - Mr. Chelski reportedly presented Mr. Putin with one of the most expensive Yachts in the world (about $50 Mill)

10. For his generous gift, Mr. Chelski gets to sell his oil company (aquired just as "illegaly" as Khodorkovskiy's Ukos) back to the state for $13bln. (highest sale ever recorded in RF). Rumor also has it that huge portion of the profits Mr. Chelski got for selling his company went into Puta's pocket. So, figuring even if Puta got $1 bln - still not a bad payday for hookin' yo homey up. Must be nice... RECLAIM COUNTRY'S OIL RESERVES (and line your pocket too).

Mr. Chelski does pass GO, does collect $13bln (or whatever is left after he pays off Puta and his chronies), unlike Khodarkovski who does not pass GO, goes directly to jail.

The word is that there's a plan to make it look like like Khodorkovskiy is trying to break out of the prison - so that he can be shot. Forget your "Prison Break" show - this is the real deal.

Back to Putin - he has created an atmosphere where Russian people do think that he's the best. The opposition is in small, opressed numbers. People who live outside of Moscow and don't live in metropolitan areas - all their info comes from state controlled and censored media that praises Putin.

And where law (that can be changed on the fly to suit Mr. Putin) does not reach, there are plenty of KGB goons available to finish the things that law openly cannot.

Make no mistake about it - RUSSIANS WANT STALIN. Putin is a newer, slightly more moderate version of Stalin. He's only giving the gray, undeducated majority what they've all wanted - a jailer they can live with, while they rot away in their prison and think they're happy. Now, if this is not a real-life Matrix scenario - I don't know what is.

Long live Our Czar Vladimir! errrm, I mean THE ARCHITECT!

Not in a Mickey Mouse's ass crack's chance. Listen to the cretins over there - they deserve each other. People who want democracy are in minority. Hell, even Ukraine is backpeddaling now - look who won the elections there... and on what platform? That's right - mostly anti-western sentiments. "Yeah we hate Russians, yeah, we want independence... but hell!!! Raise my gas bill 4x???? Sheet, gimme russians - Americans ain't feeding my family!"

Putin's politics in action. Cut the gas and ukrainian elections go the way he wanted them to go to begin with. Politics at their finest.

people don't know any better mainly because the media is controlled by the government and they have no choice over that. they are stupid as well because they trust in ideals that never work and cannot work because of what they really are, ie communism or socialism. they think by placing someone to "Give the people :insert whatever" is better than democracy. well it's not, why? because capitalism actually works, and so far it's the best we have. not to mention the mere fact that back in the day when factory workers wanted to rise up against the "owners" and create their own owners and governments...guess what...YOU'RE DOING THE EXECT SAME THING YOU'RE FIGHTING AGAINST!
