Well it's the reality already. In cubase sx 3, you have an option to integrate all your hardware synths, and use them almost the way you use vst's. For example, when I use my virus c i select it from my vst instruments/external instruments and choose the Virus c, nord lead 3 or my JP8080. You than have an option to display a specialized pannel, for the diefferent synths. Virus c pannel is available on the net, and came with cubase, but some pannels you might have to make yourself, but there is an tutorial on that for cubase. Basically on the virus c pannel, you have most of the functions, and you can choose to use the knobs on the unit itself, or use the specialized pannel. which looks like a vsti synth, that controls the virus c. it's very simmilar to virus ti's software integration. You can eaven freeze the external synths :), but the computer records it in audio first. This whole external instrument integration is a great feature, especially when i don't have any internal effects in Nord lead 3, and when using it as a external instrument, I can apply whatever effect in real time with zero latency, well latency is compensated by Cubase.. But it's just really great. But anyways you can find a lot more info about that on the net. There is of course another way to apply effects to hardware synths in cubase, but this is the most logical, and easy way ;)
anyways.. here is a link to give you an example how the pannels look, there is quite a few of them there..

I am not sure what other software supports hardware integration to this extent , but sx 3.1 does :) |
