do backpacks come with wheels. i'll ideally like one i can wear and pull...b/c i'm little and lazy |
I'll be looking for one too soon.
i was told it'd best to get a back pack that fits your size and frame (they have ladies' bags) esp if you'll be using it a lot. Since it'll be more comfortable - i.e. bigger isn't always better ;)
I'll probably got to MEC get is 'sized' and educated on what to look for, then hunt around for more affordable bags at other places or just buy it at MEC. I buy my school bags there and they last forever. It's a good investment, especially if you're planning to do a lot of traveling. |

The way they built the pivotal system to adjust the load on longer hikes is admirable but I know it had issues with a.) long term use and b.) customer satisfaction. We had to put these at clearance to get rid of them in the end - despite if a pack breaks and has lifetime warranty, the North Face's warranty turn around time is horrendous and who really wants to deal with that? If you ever have a warranty issue, go back to the dealer who sold it to you and see if they can work it out for you - you'll get quicker results and they might just trade you a new pack rather than having to wait on repairs.
Sorry to rant - I just hate the North Face. Majority of what we sold was North Face but it was mostly to the vast array of yuppies out there who wanted the name more than a quality product. The great Denali Fleece Jacket fiasco (at $165 US a pop yet it's not windproof and isn't really that warm) is a great example of this.
The Osprey packs I adore for comfort value - they fit like glove on me but everyone has their shape. The mother of all packs is Arc'Teryx but those are uber-gear at $500 for a pack or more. Gregory is another solid line for good backpacking packs. |
I never buy North Face clothing for pretty much the reason you stated, way over priced for less than stellar gear.
I can't see this pack breaking down anytime in the next 15 years and by then I will be fat and old and need a different pack anyway. :) So I'm quite happy with it as someone who wears it and owns one. If i didn't have this one though then I would have likely gone with a Osprey Crescent 85 or 110. I've also had decent cheaper pack by Lowe Alpine. |

not sure if anyone has mentioned this before as I haven't read the lengthy posts above, but one thing to make sure of.. is to DO NOT buy a top loading backpack. If you are travel backpacking it is much better to get a backpack that zips all the way down, almost like luggage does. This way you don't have to rummage through your bag from the top down looking for somthing at the bottom.
MEC Walkabout Travel Pack
I've used this backpack on three trips now, it doesn't fail. It's perfect. |
This is the one I have but the smaller version without the bottom compartment. Works like a charm. I recommend NOT taking a huge suitcase (even with wheels) if you are walking around from place to place. If you are taking a cab everywhere in terms of getting from the airport/train station to the hotel then it's not a huge issue. |

It depends on what you are doing.
If you are doing travelling/hostelling yeah, get a travel pack (front zip) with harness. If you are doing any bushwalking/hiking in addition I'd recommend getting a hybrid pack, these have a front and top openings which are really handy. When you are walking its much easier to put and grab stuff from the top than the front.
If you are buying it just for hiking get a walking pack, they are usually much more comfortable.
I'd also recommend getting one with a harness, it makes it a heck of a lot easier to move around than one with just hand straps. If you are flying its also advisable to get one that has a flap that zips over the harness, airline companies tend not to like heaps of straps and stuff hanging off packs (as well as being neater when you aren't using it).
For reference I have a macpac Utopia (hybrid pack). |

*bump
i'm looking at getting this one tomorrow. i was wondering if anyone has it, or knows anything about it. i'd be getting either the medium or large. thanks
MEC Fast-Track Rolling Duffle
Size WxLxH Capacity Weight
Small 42x69x34cm 80L 4.0kg
Medium 46x79x36cm 110L 4.8kg
Large 48x91x37cm 130L 6.9k
The Fast-Track is best described as a deluxe trunk on wheels. But that’s not even half the story. With smooth rolling wheels and a one-hand-operated telescoping handle, this duffel makes it a breeze to go from hotel to airport. The bag also has a hideaway shoulder harness that makes it a lot easier to carry your bag short distances over rough terrain.
Nothing on this bag has been left to chance. The big burly zips and clips will take on the most abusive baggage handlers, and the bomber 1680 ballistic nylon exterior fabric scoffs in the face of abrasive luggage racks and carousels. The simple exterior reduces the chances of snags and tears but has rugged trunk style handles in all the right places. The front of the bag also has a full-zip bucket-style pocket. The wide open panel-style opening makes packing a breeze. On the inside of the lid, well-placed mesh storage bags make ideal compartments for toiletries, socks, and underwear. Inside the main compartment a separate bag keeps your dirty shoes away from your clothes, and elastic straps keep your kit right where you packed it.
