Review: Carl Cox @ Virgin Times Square

So it's pouring in Manhattan as I walk the 18 or so blocks from my place down to Virgin Records. I have my umbrella up and have a lot on my mind as I'm walking, so as I walk into Virgin, I'm closing my umbrella and answering my phone at the same time. This causes me to walk into the clear glass door like an idiot, something that in turn provoked a peal of laughter from some kids that were on their way out of the store. Damn, what a bad way to start off.
Frustrated, I walk past security, closing my umbrella, and focusing all of my attention on that as I walk right into some dude. I'm about to apologize, and then I see who it is... Carl Cox?!?! Yep, there he is, even more imposing than in pictures (I've never seen him live before). Yet, as soon as he realizes that I know just who he is, he starts laughing and starts talking about his upcoming mini-set in Virgin's EDM room, along with telling me about a few of the gigs that he spun at recently. So we stand up there and have a conversation at the door of Virgin as countless hapless persons walk by with no idea what a big deal this guy is. Eventually, one of his agents comes by and tells him that the equipment is set up... so down we go.
A sizeable crowd has gathered, and is cheering a bit by the time he gets on. Then a fan yells something that I couldn't quite make out, so Cox responds by saying, "Sorry I'm using CDs and not Vinyl... makes me feel like a Psytrancer" (i may have messed up the quote, but that was the general meaning of it). Then Carl begins to drop some hot , messing with the FX and scratching like a pro. The only problem: The crowd, which is rather large, is just standing still and staring as some amazing house is being banged out! I couldn't believe that nobody had even put their hands up... so I decided to wave my hands in the air and party as if I were at Crobar.
At a certain point in the night, I turn around and who is right behind me if not Hitokiri. So we chat for a while, and Cox just starts dropping some really nice high energy beats (I especially liked one where the vocals kept repeating the word 'system'), all the while cranking the FX. By this point, a whole section of people is dancing, and I had said hello to another TA, Mischa (recently arrived from Amsterdam).
So at the end of the night, the three TAs (Mischa, Hitokiri, and I) went up to Carl and got individual photos taken with him... hopefully Hitokiri will put them up soon (they're good, imo).
Great miniset, I just wish he had spun for much longer than he actually did. |

Parts of the crowd seemed too cool to dance. There were times when Carl would switch to a tune and shout, "Come on!" I was really getting into it but then I realized maybe the reason why people weren't dancing was because it was so hot just standing. Carl was sweating bullets in his black button down shirt which I've never seen him spin in. He did the best he could given the circumstances. The sound would cut out at points, he didn't have monitors facing him... He was like, "I'm working really hard here...it's not Twilo." All in all, I'm glad I came out in the rain to show him some love. Got a great pic and a signed CD.
