tire question for my car

i have a 66 mustang, which i am restoring to stock.
however, all the tires are pretty worn and i don't feel that it is safe to drive it, let alone drive it while it's raining.
stock tire size is only 14", and i have a pair fo 15" tires in my garage that are relatively new (used for only a few hundred miles)
as i have never really modified cars other than to stock (i.e restoratioin etc.) and not much in the way of performance/cosmetics, i am wondering the costs and advatages of putting on these tires that are just 1" more.
i realize that they would have a bit more traction etc. due to the larger surface area and diameter, but what about stopping distance, acelleration, inertia of the moving tire, etc?
should i just shell out $250 for all new rubber, or would it be fine to use these? |

Well it depends on a lot of things.
14" vs. 15" is the wheel size not the tire size. There are various tire sizes for each size wheel. A tire with less sidewall will flex more in cornering offering less stability in corners but will offer a more comfortable ride typically. Typically you want a tire/wheel combo that is equal or close to equal as the stock diameter as possible to avoid changes to the speedometer as well as tire rubbing on fender walls. Then you have to factor in the width of the tire which will increase cornering and give you better traction in dry weather but may decrease traction in cold/wet weather, may slightly decrease gas mileage, and will be heavier than the counterparts. You also have to make sure with the wheel offset on your vehicle that the tires aren't too wide or you will get fender rubbing. Finally consider weight of the tires. Lighter tires will decrease outside rotational mass and will help with speed and braking. You want to keep the weight furthest from the center of the wheel as light as possible. If you knew any of this ignore what I just spent 5 minutes typing.
Maybe write down here the tire size difference, may help us a bit more.
