Is Trance going the POP way?

I am just at the moment listening to talla-2xlc (his weekly technoclub radio show) and he just presented the new Above & Beyond tune by stating that the two guys would now more and more deliver POP instead of Trance and he added "much like Gabriel & Dresden".

So what do you think: is it true? Are Gabriel & Dresden as well as Above & Beyond playing more and more POP instead of Trance? Do you agree?

I myself think that the gap between Trance and Pop becomes thinner and thinner each day and the future may indeed reveal that talla said the truth.

WHAT?

Trance has been going pop since 1999, nothing really new there. I think it's just only recently that more and more producers have started to notice how big the pop-trance/dance market is and have completely turned away from their roots.

Not many people want to accept it (and will probably call me a meanie again  ) but some of these acts that people still praise as gods of trance really aren't that far away from the likes of DJ Sammy etc. and the gap is getting smaller all the time.

this is why one turns to the lunatics of the underground, your venetian snares, your ricardo villalobos, your einstuerzende neubauten. but then its not really danceable, nor is it trance. nevermind :/

Well...

G&D and A&B are pretty pop....

im not too sure why talla did that... i thought they were into hard trance.....

anyways... most of the famous artists are going pop so that they can attract nOObs from around the globe. Thats why ul here most of the nOObs cheering about tiestos, markus' G&Ds lastest performances

But it is their past which gave them their reputation.

Bottomline....if you dont like pop... try reaching for the underground stuff... aka tarkan baunder kaan duzarat...shiloh..son kite vsag..etc etc

Trance is going pop because the big names are going pop....we still have good being produced

Yes but DJ Sammy's music is aesthetically void of any art or beauty. I've yet to hear more than two songs as such from any top producer.

Seriousely. I've heard this for the first time recently (yes I know I've been living under a rock), and I thought - wait a minute, this is ten times as cheesy or poppy as anything people whine about today. So that being said, I don't see pop-trance moving closer to pop than it was before. Maybe it's just that a more pop-oriented audience has been drawn to the scene, and today's pop-trance is what appeals to them the most.

When i think pop I think of all the hip hop/emo rock stations that play top 10 at night from people like 50 cent, eminem, linkin park, and yellowcard. So to me I dont think trance is anywhere near pop music. The closest was DJ Sammy/Lasgo a few of years ago but even that hardly even broke into the charts.

This is exactly what I meant. Denial.

so what?

It is still fun music, it does not matter how pop it is. G&D have admitted openly in interviews that they make pop music, BT has said much similar things about his music and pop, does that make their music any less enjoyable?

I think we just need to get over this, so we enjoy some pop music, big ing deal! Being underground just for its own sake is really lame, just like stuff because you genuinely like it, not because you are on a quest to separate yourself from the "masses" that you hate so much.

I divide trance's poppyness into three levels
Trance - hypnotic, repetitive, often called "classic trance"
Charismatic Trance - melodies, breakdowns, supersaws, snare rolls, anthems, but still instrumental, still not quite top40 material, think stuff like forbidden fruit or eugina
Pop Trance - Vocals, cliches, Sammy, Lasgo, ATRC

I like the term "charismatic" it implies a certain degree of formulaic, it is the stuff played in clubs that when people hear it they all know to raise their hands in the air at the same time, all know when to jump into a frenzy, all know when to stand still for a moment, everybody is on the same wavelength, following the cues given in the music. It is much like in a "charismatic church" where choirs will clap their hands and old ladies will dance in the isles, everybody knows when they are supposed to shout "amen!", because they are following a charismatic leader.

Pop trance isnt exactly charismatic, the crowd for pop trance dont act the same way, half the time they dont even dance, they just stand around and sing along. Pop is more like a commodity, charismatic is more like an addictive ritual, the border between the two is often blurry, but I beleive you can have charisma without being top40 material.

That said, I enjoy alot of charismatic and pop trance, I also like to listen to regular trance alot
