Made this in March/April 2006.
It's a remake of a classic by composer Jean Michel Jarre. Fire & Ice did a remake of this around 2000-ish that was a pretty cool melodic trance tune that just tossed a big mass of synth at you. This version is a bit more airy, it's got lots of pads, a few new counter-melodies and things, and a more modern bassline.
It starts off with a more classic feel and progresses quite a bit. I think it's pretty good. I threw in a sample that a few of you might recognize as well. Enjoy!

Ive always liked the melody of souvenir de chine, and i loved the Fire & Ice version...i like the first couple of minutes of yours with the melody in the strings - i just dont really like the rest of the synths you used throughout the song...they sound very basic - they need a lot more FX,delays, reverb on them to make them sound not so 'preset'....
i like the plucked synth you used near the end....overall,this is a nice relaxing listen, cos i love that melody so much :) |

Do you mean the synth that starts at 4:07 and is filtered in from about 4:07-4:42, staying in for most of the rest of the track (kinda the "main lead" so to speak?)
Or the one that enters at 2:57 and comes back in again at 7:03? It's just a very simple counter-melody that I wrote to go with the track.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment. |

yeah around 7:00 - i just feel if you put some massive orchestral pads in there then it would sound so much better! |

Isn't the song kinda full of those already? What happens is at 5:52, a bit of an envelope and filter is applied to the pads to create that "airy" feeling. Instead of being straight in at full volume, they're a bit louder on the offbeats and pulled back on the beats. I don't really want to revert them at that stage in the song; I think it gives the track some energy. What I could do is add another layer of pads, but I'm not sure that at that stage in the track I want to water it down like that. |

| well you can get much bigger analog synth pads near the end copying the melody...like the rank 1 sound of '99 hehe...just would give it a good trancy climax..but thats just me obsessed by big sounding pads :) |

Heheh. It's not 1999 anymore. That track has enough pads already ;) |

havent read what everyone else has said. Havent heard the original version. I love the vocal effect, mastering is right where it needs to be. The choice of instruments for percussions is good too. Now the choice of intruments for the synths. i think you could widen the pitch of the lead synth that grows off the first silence. the offbeat one. I love the delayed attack though. Or add some reverb, a chorus, and a filtered lfo to that lead. I think that would make it more intresting. Same for the pad. the pad and the lead almost seem like the same exact intrument (with a slight change in the filtering). I like the melody in the apex, but the instruments again make one lose interest (even the short harp sounding one). if it had something more widen pitch maybe it could change that. The beauty in the song happens when the arp starts playing .... but that should, in my opinion only be played once or twice, and then slightly alternate the melody. the end is classic. good mastering ... i like the freq cut down. at the end... especially with the bass sounding synth at the end. Im not sure how you did the effect at the end of the song... my guess is what an LFo smaller than 1 beat in speed. hehehe. but i i like it.
please check my song out. Bleu 13 and let me know what you think |

Thanks very much for the feedback! Right now I don't have the greatest selection of synths (the pads are samples). I'll try adding some effects or something.

I took one of those "laser" sound effects, looped it, added a filter, added reverb, mixed it down. Then I took the resulting sample and essentially played it every 1/4th of a beat at a pitch that starts low, goes up, and then comes down again. Probably added more effects after; I don't remember. :D
