I always dream in colour - at least the dreams that I can rememebr.
I've been having some pretty wacky dreams. Last night it was something about a sail boat and it sank as soon as someone touched it. I had to swim away so i woudln't get caught in the whirlpool it created. Then i got on land and it was pouring rain and i was running trying not to step on the worms (you knwo how they always come out when it rains). Then ahead, the sun was shining and the ground was covered in coloured candy. I took a picture of some people (can't rememebr who they were) and then when I went to show them the picture, I was in it too. It was totally trippy and then I tried taking more pictures, but it wouldn't work and then my alarm woke me up :p |

everyone dreams in colour.
REM sleep dreams are more pictoral, reflecting almost real-life. things also happen in real time. your senses also play a part, but to notice that is quiet incredible, as usually only blind ppl, especially those who are born blind, as aware of their other senses in sleep
Slow-wave sleep rarely produces colourful dreams. often upon awake you only remember that you are thinking of something and your dream was rather boring
so if you are having slow-wave dreams, it just means, a) you're not getting REM sleep or b) you are consistantly being woken up during slow wave sleep and don't remember your REM dreams |

A)is not really an option for more than one night, even under lab settings, unless very intense. Studies have shown that even people in labratory settings who are woken up everytime they switch to a REM sleep cycle tend to swtich back to REM cycles much faster, skipping through the other 3 phases of sleep much faster in order to maintain an even amount of REM sleep. People who sleep 5 hours a night regularly and people who sleep 9 hours a night regularly tend to have the same amount of time dedicated to REM sleep. In Brunner's experiment in 1990 they woke people up an aver of 17 times in a night to prevent REM sleep cycles as they began. By the 7th night they had to wake people up an average of 67 times. He also showed that people rebound back during the next 3 nights following REM deprived sleep cycles and have much higher amounts of REM sleep to compensate for the lacking amounts from previous nights.
To verfiy the REM vividness of dreams researchers woke people up 10 and 15 minutes into REM sleep cycles and even people who recorded having previously not experienced dreams were astounded to recall so clearly what they had been dreaming about. Think for example on the days you sleep in with no alarm clock, you tend to naturally wake up out a slow wave sleep pattern... this will unlikely result in vivid dreams. On other mornings when your alarm clock goes off and scares you half to death because you felt like you still had another hour or two, it is far more likely to wake you up during a REM sleep cycle and hence result in more vivid recollection of dreaming. Try setting it for random different times and see what happens. ;) |
