w00, im now an apprentice electrician :)

i started my (career) working life as an apprentice electricial, did the job for 3 years, its a very hard trade, both physically and complicated at times too. You have some great times too, workman sites have great senses of humor - office jobs are just pathetic when it comes to office politics, things like that happened in the building trade, and you'd take them to one side and plant them one. Thing about being an electrician is u need to be switched on all the time, ready to be given anything and just do it without needing 15 minutes to compute the task.

Hope u enjoy it as much as i did.

I dont want to dampen your spirit but when you've spent 5+ hrs at the top of an extension ladder chopping into brick a round hole for ducting for a bathroom extration fan on a cold wet building site, or spent 4hrs crawling around someones attic where you cannot stand, breathe in the dust and thats up there knowing one false room and your foot is going right through their bedroom ceiling, or work a 24hr straight shift because some n00b got their sums wrong and u've got to rip out all your work and put it in again somewhere else, the job isn't as rosey as you once thought.

But ask me if the jobs ive had since being an electrician are any better? Hard to say. I go home and have enough energy to go out. Im on fixed hours (roughly), meaning i can plan a social life after work where as before i could not as i had no idea what time i was getting home until i got home. I can make a cup of tea and brouse the net when i want. Downsides are offices are more pathetic than school playgrounds. Offices full of women, despite the obvious attraction, are not nice places to work. Petty things become full scale issues, and women management do not get along, never miss a change to pull one over their counter-part, often staff being made to suffer because of it.

So summary of my rambling i guess is ive swapped one lot of issues for another, just a totally different set. Which is better? ive asked myself that question 6 months after leaving, still haven't gotten an answer.

SO TRUE. One women in our office... guess where all the bitching comes from? 1 issue can last for weeks... seriously weeks... months even actually, in actual fact I remember one issue (about the smoking ban, that this women took personal, as always) which went on for 4 months, resulted in her taking weeks off sick, then out of her holidays, then when ever she was back thats actually all she did was talk about it.

Only one women in my office so 100% of women are exactly like that in my experiance.... :p
