Distorted Percussion

Can anyone tell me how the crackly distorted type of sound is created on percussion, i've noticed it a lot in Portishead and Massive Attack, seems to be used a lot in trip hop, perfect example is Tear Drop by Massive Attack, i've being trying to create it using overdrive plugins n stuff but just dont get anywhere!

Cheers.

Ummm whaaaat??? There is no distorted percussion on Teardrop :S ... Maybe the bass drum has a bit of saturation but it's hardly noticeable. If that's what you're looking for, try using a very "thumpy" sample, lots of low end, not much high end, add slight overdrive and then add a low pass filter on top and set the freq. way down...

If you're talking about the "grainy texture" on the percussion, like it's being played from a really old record, try using some vinylizer plugin (I'm 90% sure such things exist :p , they add subtle "dusty record-effects" to the sound )
