Because there IS no official board in the Asian area of the world, i think this is the most appropriate area to ask this.

anyone here ever lived/DJed in Japan? i would love to move/live there in my lifetime. and OF COURSE DJ there :) .

How accepting are they of foreigners? i plan to go over there prepared, finacially and knowing the language wise. Are the clubs good for a Prog/Trance/House scene?

yes i'm sure it's been asked. but this site is the one all inclusive and significant place to get the answers i'm lookin for.

any real world experience on DJing and/or the Japanese culture would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Matthew

While I don't know about how it is in Japan, I do know that when you travel to foreign countries and expect to DJ, be prepared to work your ass off. You might get a couple of quick gigs handed to you, but If you really want to become intergrated into the scene and get consistent shows its more than just "being foreign".

This is coming from someone who has spent serious time and effort getting gigs and coverage in India. Also, try not to go there without contacts- Do your homework before you go!

Yeah, I'm not riding on the fact that, "hey i'm white, i'm different," to get me gigs/acceptance.

What do you mean about working hard beyond knowing the language and having an obvious skill level?

i m not sure about japan .. but my frens say clubbin there is not really popular ... for the reason that ppl only club when they wanna get laid or something like that .. thats why most ppl tend to avoid clubs in japan.. i think what ppl in japan do is they go to karoke bars or something ..and sing and drink till they drop .. plus another thing to look at is look at all them famous japanese djs .. like satoshi tomie .. and yoji biomehanika .. i think they all got pretty popular and well known in foreign countries.. not in japan.. though i could be wrong .. :toothless :toothless

i know of some psy trance israeli dj's that been in japan djing on big raves..
there is a trance scene, don't know much about progressive...
but for sure they got clubs and parties, & alot of karoake too

one thing you should understand,
u would have to get your name famous,
releasing tracks would be the best if you in to it.
Lunar Phase 7
Yoji is like a rock star in Japan. There are some big superclubs there too. I am sure there is a trance scene, best bet is to maybe visit for a few weeks? Check it out yourself.

Low Profile
This post is kinda off topic and weird, but what the hell ;)

I'm pretty sure japs don't drink alot, because many of them can't handle the alcohol, meaning, their bodies can't break down the chemicals and they just get really sick and not really drunk :p . So maybe that's why they don't club more, they have no reason to go out and get drunk like us white people ;) ... I might be wrong though, we were discussing this is biology class a couple of years ago...

But I'm also really interested about going to Japan, I was thinking about going to TiTech (Tokyo technology institude) when I finish my studies here at home... that is, if I manage to keep my grades high enough (and I mean REALLY high :))

...and some more completely useless information: Alot of black people (african decendant) can't drink milk, because they don't have the enzyme to break down the lactose in the milk. Some decades ago, the Red Cross sent a bunch of water-solvable milk powder to refugee camps in Africa, that stuff is full of vitamins an , but when the people drank it they all got sick and puked their guts out... :stongue: ... yeah, that's not really funny..

It's amazing how much useless crap you learn at school :D

techno seems to be pretty big there though.
i remember hearing about techno festivals on mt fuji with massive lineups. Alot of the jap dj's (make that 9/10) i've caught live were techno jocks, ranging from hard chris liebing style techno to minimal funky ritchie hawtin stuff and weird weird electro dj's.

Tak Dub Bam
All i heard was that at least Westbam and a couple of other's were excited about Japan because the crowd is supposedly really open to all sorts of styles/sets, meaning if u have a big bag you can also play records from the bottom (in the same set, duhh)..
XYSHOOR
I remember once Jono Grant mentioning on ASOT XXL that ppl there also listen to trance and are rly opened to this kinds of music. Clubs like e.g. Velfarre play trance.
