of course.... pvd can do all that "risky" mixing without hardly any mistakes, so that sorta just kills tiesto's arguements.
|
PvD also has the aid of 2 computers.
Regardless... PvD is a better mixer. :p |

Danny Howells has no computer aids at all and uses both vinyl and cds. He can make them both look like n00bs mixing without any ups for 10 hours plus.:D |

| I have been out of tough with the trance scene for awhile now, but it doesn't seem like Tiesto gets the same respect as the other top guys (Armin, PVD, Ferry). Its like the last couple years ago the more knowledgable trance fans stopped caring about him. Am I wrong? |

i can sorta see where he's coming from with what he saying about risky mixing, which can entail harmonic mixing, mixing out early, dropping in tracks like in an instant, changing the mood drastically.
and making mistakes doesn't necessarily mean trainwrecking. i constantly say to myself that i'm making mistakes, but they're mistakes to me and most other people can't even hear what the mistakes i'm making.

also i need to add that even though i don't really like tiesto, i've heard a bunch of live mixes from him that are great. not quite as consistent as others, but he does pull through. on top of that, no one really complains about ferry's abilities, but i can honestly say that the last 3 times i saw him at crobar, his mixing was VERY boring. he would play a track, wait till the bassline is gone, then start mixing only the kicks and intros/outros. to me the energy dies when they mix like that. several other dj's such as markus or g&d do very similiar type mixing.
i always try to follow pvd style mixing which is continuous bassline after bassline, melodies overlapping, hearing one track ontop of the outro of another. its hard to always pull this off though, especially live but it definitely keeps the energy level way up and the flow going.
*edit*
read the interview... thoguht it was decent. |
Well put ^ i totally agree with that ;) |

i just saw tiesto on friday 5/4 at crobar...
Oh God....it was awful and now i hafta see some tiesto worshippers praise him.
now...how can u enjoy the craptacular set i heard the other night...dj kai blew tiesto outa the water aside from him not being very animated behind the decks...
Tiesto played like a couple good tracks but his mixing DESTROYED everything. You couldnt even enjoy the music cause it was played so badly.
haha at one point he tried to take the break from F16 and just drop it inside another track, it was unbelievably abrupt. It sounded like he just hit the play button on the cdj and then dropped the level on the other one...terrible.
But the mixing was kinda like that all night, everyone i was with looked at each other alarmingly every time a track was dropped. And when that track was dropped our jaws dropped. We honestly could not believe what we were hearing.
The primary ingredient in a good mix is well...MIXING!!! In my opinion tiesto doesnt deserve anywhere near the #2 spot in the world, he barely deserves the 100th.
if you cant mix, you dont deserve to be a DJ. Producer maybe, DJ no. And he shouldn't be knocking Ableton in the interview cause it woulda helped him out a bunch the other night. I would have rather seen him pull up a chair behind the decks and just let ableton do the work.
After reading the interview and seeing him life afterwards it just seems like he glorifies himself and gives excuses to make himself look better. Hes a sell out plain and simple. So yea..thats that..it may be rough, but its also true...and im sure there are others who would vouch for me. |

I agree with you 100 percent
The music within a set is always the most important thing but it can be tarnished with bad mixing and trainwrecks kill a dancefloors vibe very quickly |

R: That's another big, thing: a lot of people say that you're a risky mixer. You take a lot of risks in your mixes, rather than making it smooth. Do you see yourself as a risky mixer?
T: Yeah, I see myself as a risky mixer because I think if you mix very clean, that's great for like 3% of the audience, but the other 97% who don't have a clue about mixing tracks, they want to hear the mix. So, I like them to hear the mix, so they know there's a new track coming in.
R: Do you do that for yourself as well? Because staying on the edge is more exciting than doing the same, smooth mix?
T: Yeah, I like to mix like that. And I make mistakes, you know... every night. Every night I play I make, like, three or four, five mistakes.

They book him not once, but twice at Crobar in the next weeks. :conf: |
T: [But] on those communities, if you make three, four, five mistakes, you're the worst mixer on earth.
I agree: Tiesto, its obvious that you SUCK recently! |

I also miss his 1999-2003 stuff... Expecially the co-productions with Ferry and Armin (under Guerilla and Alibi) |

i've seen quite a few DJs/producers at clubs, and its safe to say that after seeing Tiesto at Crobar, he is by far the WORST DJ I have ever heard. i would rather have him put all his CDs & vinyls into a cement truck and let that have done the mixing. His track selection was medicore +1, at best. He put my right leg to sleep. I didn't blame my leg one bit. I have never left a club unexhausted, full of (spiteful) energy, and not drenched in my own plus all of staten island's sweat.
please stop voting for him. give real DJs/producers their recognition. |
