One of my better story ideas...

haven't thought of a good one in a while, but I finally had a stroke of brilliance.
I think a good title would be The Fad
So this guy, John, has just retired as a cop after 25 years. In his time, he's been under tremendous stress and been invovlved in shooting and killing several suspects. This has put a heavy emotional burden on him and he is in a deep state of depression that's made him an alchoholic. His son, Joseph, is (lets say) 19 and is ready to start life on his own (especially to get away from his dad, bad relationship since the drinking).
One night John and Joseph are actually getting along, but John is getting extremely drunk. John starts rambling about how horrible it's been to kill people and that he shouldn't be alone in that guilt. He puts a gun in Josephs hand and forces him to kill his neighbor (ya, there's lot of fighting and screaming and cussing before this).
John is put in prison for life and in a Joseph is forced to live the rest of his life with this experience.
It has completely traumatized Joseph to the point of insanity and now he feels he must repeat this, put the burdon of taking someone's life on someone else. So he does this and too, is imprisoned for life.
But all over the country, suddenly there are people who feel empowered by this news and force others to kill others. The media feasts on the news of people, especially law enforcement officers and war veterans causing people to kill people.
and from here i don't know where the story goes. I don't know if the main character should switch to a doctor to stop the "fad" or on some Fox News guy as he tries to calm and control the people through the media. |

| You call that a stroke of genius? How does having someone else kill somebody lessen your burden? |

i'm thinking along the lines of "i can't be happy/content/please/whatever, so i'll make everyone else feel miserable like me" kind of attitude.
besides, it starts off simple with the actions of a drunk cop. The snowball starts rolling and it ends up with some kind of horrific fad fueled by the media. maybe cult is a better word. |

first off, 19 is too old. way too old, for what you're going for.
second, i'd leave the rest of the country outta this. u start with a very personal story, demented as it is, and make it into this big social epidemic...no way
third, you need some sort protagonist to counter-balance the dad/son duo. right now u have a whole lotta evil and no audience is going to be satisfied if some unknown brings him down. lack of conflict between characters. internal conflict (sons pain and battling himself before carrying out his fathers legacy) isn't enough
oh christ, i guess the ritalin hasn't worn off yet. back to exam studying i go |

How old should the kid be? 13? I dont know wether we're getting at the father phsyically overpowering a kid versus a high school senior into pulling the trigger.
What I've pondered is the father puts a knife around the son's throat and walks him to the neighbors house in the "human shield" position. So Joseph is faced with a do or die situation, so his age is irrelevant, correct?
but i don't know about the other acts beyond the son commiting his own murder. I was thinking having some kind of Bill O'Rielly director of news kind of guy who realizes he is adding to the fuel my constantly providing coverage of the epidemic for ratings.
And then maybe a doctor who tries to fight this when he finds out his son who, i dunno, served in the Iraq war kills someone. Of course, death comes with being a doctor. so there is this whole inner struggle while he just watches the world crumble, but he'll at least try to fight it with the help of "bill orielly" |
