I'm a little confused. Did Yeltsin and Gorbachev presidency overlap?

Yeltsin was elected June 10th , 1991 and Gorbachev resigned December 25, 1991, and from my (limited) research, it looks like they were both acting as President during those 6 months, even though Gorbachevs power was wanning and most institutions had stopped listening to him

anyway, can anyone clear that up??

i'm too, um BUSY lazy to do it myself

Thanks
Mako
Hmm I thought there was some sort of a coup by Yeltsin or his supporters...? Not too sure...

supposedly Yeltsin went to Moscow to defy the coup (his famous tank speech), but it seems like it coulda been staged to gain public approval. anyone know?

thanks, i got some info off those that i didn't have before

but i'm still confused. no website clarifies who was in power from June till December

from what i can tell, there were elections, in which Yeltsin was popularily elected (first democratic election ever), but gorbachev and his side didn't acknowledge it as real or whatnot and continued to serve simultaneously?

does that sound right?

From what i read in the above links, it seems gorbachev was still the president of the soviet union while yeltsin was president of russia which accounted for half the soviet union's economy and 3 quarters of land mass.

You could also try answers.yahoo.com and post your question there.
