in my case, as someone mentioned already, my sarcasm doesn't translate well into the written word, especially if you don't know me. soooo...smilies help me out when i'm actually not trying to be sarcastic/mean/snobby. :p

I use smiles too much sometimes but it does help get your point across. Sometimes a joke isn't taken as a joke because there is nothing that indicates you are joking. On a site like this where many of us have met each other it makes it even more important to show the person you are joking because it could cause even more drama then we already have here.
