| i was having a similar problem to this with the same symptoms except it wouldnt load windows all the way unless i was in safe mode. so when i was in safe mode i ran msconfig and changed startup to selective. i havent had any problems since. im not sure if there are any permanent effects from doing this but it seemed to have cured my problem until i finish with my new computer. |

hmmm, PCs dont tend to overheat if theyre just idling (since CPU & GPU create the most heat in your box).
ty ram could be the issue, but ive never heard of it working on startup and then freezing later, only to work on startup again.
DL the nicest new drivers for everything, check the temp monitor option in your BIOS if youve got one. swap the ram sticks around.
of course, if its a software issue, format for the win ;)
good luck. |

| Sounds like a corrupt system file/dodgy disk. I'd say run scan disk to find bad sectors (start/all progs/accessories/system tools/defrag : then analyze). There is a way to reinstate the system files and check them, but I'd just sytem restore it back (start/all progs/accessories/system tools/system restore). |

I tried this. When I rebooted I aaw TONS of messages including "recovering orphaned files" and other stuff...
We'll see how it holds up after this....thank you all for the responses. |

| it could be many issues . did you recently install windows ? maybe it didn't install 100%, and it's missing some imporant dll's to run windows ? is your startup corrupt ? i agree with tree to load up by safe mode, and uncheck everything in msconfig startup, except the important ones you know are legit and working . your hard drive light could be on, but do you hear your hard drive spinning when your computer is idle ? it could be your memory ? it's not swapping between physical and vm correctly, therefore freezing your computer ? could it be your video card ? that is my problem with my computer . i tend to have too many windows open , and then my computer will freeze, because it can't take too much graphics. for my computer, since it is old and crappy, i just drop the whole hardware acceleration to none, and it works fine. many issues to point at my brotha. many issues. but most probably not a overheating issue. |
