I believe both of you, I'm more curious in how much they profited though.

No real figures are out, unfortunately. My knowledge is based off the fact that the GCN lost the least amount of money per unit sold in comparison to Sony and Microsoft prior to the price wars.

Question to everyone: Has the next generation of gaming started already, in your opinions? Has the 360 ushered in the "golden days" of gaming?

Yes and no.

Yes, the next generation is here, and I think that over the course of the next year or so, we'll see a very impressive battle between Sony and Microsoft in the "Who can make you go "OHHHHH SCHNAP!" the most" battle. I personally don't believe developers have even come close to figuring out the best way to maximize the 360 hardware, and though the majority of footage we've seen from Sony has been quite impressive, I personally think that the battle for graphics and gameplay superiority will be incredibly close, far too close to call until we've actually seen/played a PS3 for ourselves.

No, this isn't the "Golden Age" of gaming. If any era could be considered the "golden" era it would have to be the time from the release of the NES in America until the decline of the 16 bit consoles. Nintendo brought more to the table than any system before it, and brought gaming to the mainstream in a way that no other company had been able to. Growing out of that, the 16 bit console wars were arguably the single greatest time in history for gamers, as genuine competition drove the percentage of high quality games released for whichever system was your pleasure (SNES or Genesis) was at an unbelievable level. I don't think a moment like that will ever come again.

But then again, I'm a skeptic. Thanks for the question Yan, that was a lot of fun to think about!

I would say the next generation has started, but it's not very impressive. The xbox 360 seems like a buffed up x-box and is not very exciting. :(

After the piece of that was the Gamecube, I'm surprised Nintendo didn't just give up like Sega did after the Dreamcast.

Well actually I reccomend you go through their financial statements and you will see that they are making alot of money. Now if you look at microsofts xbox division you will see they didnt make any profits from the entire console + games.

It's early. Developers haven't even come close to unlocking that systems potential.

Yes, yes I know. In the end it'll just be better textures or something. It's not as exciting as when games stepped up into 3d. :(

Fair enough bro, I guess you're just going to have to wait for some seriously good virtual reality or hope that the "Wii's" controller is something amazing! ;)

Unfortunately... it looks like it's going to take a LOT to get people all that impressed again. :(

Personally, GRAW impresses the out of me :)

Well I checked the financial statements quickly and they've made a profit of 816 million US$ last year and they have ALOT of cash on hand (more than 7 billion)

also they have a very good profit ratio of 17% which seems pretty good considering their industry, altough I'd have to check into that some more.
