I'll donate my sand storm vinyl to your top student. can we come in and give them an in-house session? a live education. We'll have Clovis go over the characteristics of each type of sound and what gives it their uniqueness.

Try explaining the general theory to them at least. There are many different types of techno, but the bangin' kind is usually percussion oriented (i.e. drums, congas) while trance is focused on the melody/lead. Here are some great threads:

thank you, i will definitely use these when discussing music again with my students as it always comes up with them on a weekly basis. it usually starts on mondays with: "what did you do this weekend ms. barry" and i tell them what dj i went to see. i'm still educating myself as well since i'm still somewhat of a newbie to this scene

That is way cool.. You know they are so interested in coming to class Monday because hearing about your weekend is far more entertaining and interesting the typical text book stuff.. We all like to feel some personal connection with our teachers, we learn better cuz we like them and look up to them!! Way to go Sarah on helping to mold the next gereration of Trance Addicts!!

So today in class my 8th graders were working on an assignment of making corrections on some work they completed this week and one of them asks: "Ms. Barry, could we listen to some Techno?"

and as some of you know i periodically play trance, house, etc in my classroom for them. so now they're asking for it b/c they like it.

but the funny thing was, 2 of my kids said yeah, do you have sandstorm? i almost fell out of my chair laughing. but i did find an internet station that was playing psy-trance and we listened to that for the remainder of the period!

they tend to work really well with the music going and are even focused more. they were dancing around in their seats but still working. wonder what my principal would have said if he would have walked in? :conf:

I admire you... where were the teacher like you when I was in junior high???

:p hey guys thanks for all your kind words. being a teacher is the best thing in my life! i love it and love the kids i teach.

with junior high kids there is no bulling, it's a tough age to be and a tough age to teach! i'm still a pretty strict teacher, have high expectations of them, hold them to their choices and follow through with consequences. but i also try to be real with them and they know i care about them.

one very common thread i, as an adult (:nervous: ) have with them is the music and my love for EDM which i can share with them. i teach students who have learning disabilities, behavior disorders, and other health impairments so they already don't dig school too much. so i try to give them something they can relate to and feel comfortable talking to a teacher about something other than what they are struggling with in school.

as some of you know me, i am quite the idiot and act goofy most of the time, this is how i teach, so my kids get a good laugh as well. but i'll keep educating them as well as i can about edm. one funny thing a student did say to me about clubbing, "ms. barry, wouldn't it be funny if you saw one of us one day at the clubs" and my response: "the day i see a former student walk into the club is the day i'm done clubbing"

peace
