Abiogenesis, fun noises inside

OK, this might not impress anyone, this isn't some smashing dance floor record label worthy tune. It isn't trance, it isn't dancable, it is hardly anything worthy of praise at all, but it is something, which is certainly better than nothing, and I'm not posting this for praise or to become a celebrity or anything like that, I just want to share some noise I made with you all.

With that out of the way, I tried to depart from the usual and do something original, it didn't turn out so fantastic, this was mainly for a music class and I had a deadline so it had to be finished and if it weren't for that deadline it could have been better. I made my first attempt at some algorithmic composition, I wrote a C++ program which generates a music score, using the famous cellular automata simiulation knon as Conway's Game of Life, hence the name Abiogenesis, life simiulation in a computer, hehe. So a program generates a score file, I feed this score file into the csound software where it plays a virtual instrument, just a simple little buzz, but there are a great many of these little buzzes.

Here is a picture of it:

You see the usual implementation of conways game of life and a snippet of the code. The X's represent living cells in the simiulation, the lines represent empty dead ones, each round of the simulation those X's cover more of the space, like bacteria. That space is mapped to noise in the music, up and down on the surface is mapped to pitches, left and right to stereo panning, so you can actually hear the creatures moving around the stereo image, try looking at the 2 channels wirh a spectrum analyzer, its fun. The living cells make noise correspinding to their location on the surface, the empty ones are silent. I divided the tune into 4 chunks that each run the simulation a little differently, the last one is the most interesting I think.

I hope you like it, the sound is at least interesting I think, it is made using nothing but free stuff. I wrote the program in C++, you all can cannabalize it if you like, hell, you can butcher the noises if you like, its not like this is some fancy expensive production, do whatever you want. I doubt this appeals to a trance crowd, but it took a lot of work for me to make it, so I just have to let you all hear it, I know it is a big wav file, sorry but I had to submit the thing in cd quality.

ok, it is no longer a giant wav file, I replaced it with an ogg vorbis, 6 megs, much better for downloading.

sounds like somethin of a sci fi movie..must have been pretty hard writing the program for it my mate does c++ and its complicated stuff...
good luck with future endevours....reveiew my new tune twisted by covert23 thanks...all the best michael.....:)

ill give it a listen in a while, when I get to a computer that has speakers :)
covert23
ok thanks:)

I showed this thing to a dude at a job interview this past monday, and he totally offered me the job, yay for noise! I mean im sure it wasn't the ony reason he hired me, but it was still one of those things that set me apart. Not that it is some wonderful glamourous music industry job though, I will be coding over the summer, maybe I'll get enough $$ for a new PC.

Mind you, this isnt dancey music, it is more just an installation type piece, I could render an infinite amount of sound with the program I wrote, if only I had a better CPU.
Majutsu
i like your c++ work
i told you on the other forum i like the c now too. i'm using cecilia instead of the linux you are though. I say good for you!

good job!
