orrr leave them what the law entitles them while admitting that they are morally reprehensible, disgusting people, and yet entitled to protest... and then if you think a funeral is a private event, then enact responsible legislature to prevent the defiling of funerals, but still try to understand that they are entitled to protest in other places. You're free to stand across the street and protest their protesting if you wish. Radicals will always exist so try not to lose your head or you'll have headaches your whole life.

Two different bills, first one in process, second one passed, see for yourself:

http://www.senate.mo.gov/06info/BTS...ype=R&BillID=90

quote:
Missouri: SCS/SB 578 - This act makes it unlawful for any person to engage in protest activities within one hour prior to the commencement of any funeral service, and until one hour following the cessation of the service. First violations are punishable as a Class B misdemeanor and subsequent violations are punishable as a Class A misdemeanor. This act shall be known as "Spc. Edward Lee Myers' Law".

http://www.in.gov/apps/lsa/session/...getBill&docno=5

quote:
Indiana: Disorderly conduct at funerals and intimidation. Makes disorderly conduct a Class D felony instead of a Class B misdemeanor if it: (1) is committed within 500 feet of the location where a funeral, burial, memorial service, funeral procession, or viewing is taking place; and (2) adversely affects the funeral, burial, memorial service, funeral procession, or viewing. Makes intimidation a Class D felony instead of a Class A misdemeanor if the person to whom a threat is communicated is an employee of a: (1) court; (2) probation department; or (3) community corrections program.

Indiana's definition of disorderly conduct from Wikipedia:

quote:
A person who recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally:

(1) engages in fighting or in tumultuous conduct;
(2) makes unreasonable noise and continues to do so after being asked to stop; or
(3) disrupts a lawful assembly of persons;

commits disorderly conduct. . .

So you weigh "morality," the First Amendment, and your own gut feeling to decide. I think the reaction from government has been quite swift and adequate so far. It's all emergency measure passed quickly.

I thought a group like that would. My thoughts in no particular order:

For me, it's more complicated than them being wackos, honestly. In a potentially dangerous way, it shows that government has the power to respond with "emergency measure" to something deemed by them to be inappropriate -- this time, most Americans would agree with legislation, but next time...? Then I started thinking that, on the other hand, if people intentionally cause harm to others, there of course should be law against it. But then I started thinking about what a broad thing "causing harm" and "disorderly conduct" are and whether it's justified to pass measures specifically aimed at hurting or helping one group - isn't that discrimination? But then I decided that governments discriminate a lot already, and people support at least some of that discrimination (e.g. rights of citizens over non-citizens and prohibition of Holocaust denial jumped into my head), so why should this discriminatory measure not be accepted? I asked myself whether discrimination aimed at keeping peace and keeping society safely moderate did not create a double standard of discrimination, and whether this double standard could be a good one.

I thought about how far private property extends at a cemetery. Is a family's private property only on the grave they paid for, or does it really extend 500 feet beyond?

Then I started thinking about how if there's no law, how people will take it into their own hands like the Patriot Guard Riders have at these funerals: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Guard.

That led me to think about the Minutemen at the Mexican border and how wrong I think that is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4384855.stm

Then I questioned how different the Patriot Guard and the Minutemen really were...

Then I thought it might be time to stop thinking and start studying for tomorrow's finals.
