Half-Marathon 2006

Sunday was a highlighting day for myself.

I ran the Half Marathon in Long Branch, NJ. That was 13.1 miles altogether.

It was a great experience and I add that as one of my greatest accomplishments life-to-date.

So .. got to chuck the cups of gatorade and water out on the streets like I've always pictured it on tv!! Gatorade was the first that was lined up, so kept drinking that .. it was so thick from the sugary glucose, I once thought I was going to choke from it. It felt like plegm stuck in my throat. Then one time, while I was running and drinking, I snuffed it through my nose and at that one time, I had boogers and gatorade flying out of my nose! After passing a few more water stations, I got the hang of it.

It sure helped when the people lined up on the street were there to cheer you on. FTW: a teenaged girl hopping up and down banging a stick over a frying pan. yellin out, "you can do it!! you can do it!!"

Highlighing Accomplishment: Cap was 8.5 miles during training, which included speed-walking, but during the marathon, I didn't do much speed-walking like during my training .. AND I did tire my muscles out during A&B on Friday.

The music that was playing on repeat that helped me survive through this? It was PVD's MAYDAY from 02. Every time an energizing track played, I found it to be my energy to move forward.

Another great thing was at the end, a couple of my friends squirted some of the SmartWater on me. They gave us runners medals and hats. At the runner's station later, they had lines and lines of Ottowa granola bars.

Somehow, I relate this marathon experience to clubbing as well? How? PowerBar has Power Fast Fuel Gel's that contain Electrolytes and some contain caffeine, and they had sports beans energizing jelly beans that contain electrolytes with vitamin C and E, Glaceau's SmartWater marketing strategy is the electrolytes they have in the water. lol

"You've got to have fuel to run"
"You've got to have fuel to dance"

:D

It was fun!!!!!!!

Here's a some what of a race report that I posted to my team mates. Last year I ran NY with a charity team and I am going to run again with the team. It's the New York Road Runners Foundation Team for Kids.

Oh.. and I use Shot Bloks.. the stuff in the Powerbar Gels and GU is really hard on my stomach and Cliff products are rice based. The bloks are bulky to carry, but they taste like Gummi Bears and I like them much better than gels. http://www.clifbar.com/eat/shot_blok.cfm?location=shot

"I loved the NJ Marathon! I am deff. going to do it again next year! I highly recommend it to all of you for next year!
It was such a great day! I really liked the course since it was two loops I got to see my friends and family at the start, finish and 1/2 way through.
The race was well organized and they had really great hats and shirts for everyone that were dri-fit. I was also excited that the front of the shirt matched my TFK hat! I knocked exactly 23 minutes off of my New York time coming in at 4:30:11! I tried to stick to the communte, warm-up and race and I did have a negative split for the second half. I loved being able to fly right past people the last few miles! I was in so much pain though! I've been having some issues with my legs again and on Wednesday I hurt myself really bad. I went to the doctor and got taped for the run. It was really sunny yesterday and now I have crazy tan lines! Haha..
Thank you to Otis who came out and gave me my second wind at the last mile. As I picked up speed I could hear people cheering and saying look at her finishing strong!
I was so worried about finishing this race. Josh was a huge motivation. The morning of the race he told me I had to finish because according to him you are not a "marathon runner" until you have completed more than one. Apparently finishing only one you have "run a marathon". So now I have the right to say that I am a marathon runner!"

Wow! Congrats!! Incredible job!! Great results!

My chip time was 2:18:29!!

How long have you been running for? Would like to hear how you got there!!

The weather was just awesome yesterday. Hey, you look great in the pics! I'll post mine up when I get them..

I've only been training for 2-3 months, running twice a week.

I think the next one we're doin is the Philly one on Sept. 17th!

Do you do any of the New York Road Runners races?
Check it out at nyrr.org

My training is crazy.. I wouldn't exactly recommend it. I have only been running less than a year and I have now completed two marathons and my first race was a 1/2 marathon!
Miss Bliss
You guys are awesome :) I suck at running endurance-wise but I like it. Used to do x-country in HS but never did well in races.
kid nyce
congrats jane and jennifer - keep it up....

How long did you run when you began? Running on a tread is bad, so i have been trying to run outside more otften but its much harder since you have to push youself unlike on a treadmill.

I just started running and could do 5 miles with one stop, but i am trying to get to a mile in 7 mins, if Geroge Bush can run a mile in 7mins i should be able to do it also....now im at around 8.5.

Know any good places to run outisde? i been doing alley pond/cunningham and the basyside marania in queens

It's very funny that you bring sport beans up... I always eat a pack of those before I go out... I also remember eating 2 powerbars before going to PvD @ Roxy, where I danced all night in the sweltering heat while 100% sober. So maybe there is something to it...

Before I started doing races I ran only once in awhile and would run for an hour or so.. so about 5-7 miles. Then I did the Queens 1/2 Marathon last May.
Training for New York last year I was running a lot. I would do group runs with my team 2 days a week and a long run with them on the weekends. During the week it was also 5-7 miles and the long runs would go up 2 miles each week. I would also run in between. I got stress fractures last year, so training for this past marathon I was running less then what I trained last year.
Do you stop at the water stops during the races? I actually find that if I stop for a few seconds and take a few sips of water I finish the miles better and faster. I run outside and sometimes on a treadmill. During the winter I was on the treadmill a lot since it gets dark early. I run everywhere since I am all over the place. I work in Trenton and I am in South Plainfield, Hoboken and New York a lot. I love running in Central Park since a full loop in the park is 6 miles. I also like to run up the back side of Hoboken into Jersey City because there are some steep spots where you can do hill repeats. This winter I also ran a 15K in CT that was mostly all uphill.
Do you have any interest in running the NYC Marathon? I ran with a charity team last year and I loved it. I am going to run with them again this year. I am so pumped up from the Jersey Marathon that I am also looking into doing another one in between.
Since I ran with a team and trained with coaches last year I learned a lot from them. So if you have any running questions let me know.
You should also buy a heart rate monitor to help you train. That way you know for sure if you are training properly.
