Should South Park quit while it's ahead?

Seinfeld did it and it proved to be the right move for them.
The Simpsons haven't and that show is now the antithesis of it's former self.
This season of South Park has been very hit or miss. It's by no means been terrible, but I think you'd be hard pressed to convince me that it's anywhere near as good as previous seasons. Episodes like the Towelie (God do I love him, but still...) episode and the Al Gore episode seemed directionless, and full of "filler." And I didn't find "Cartoon Wars" all that funny at all.
In fact, the only episode from this entire season that has really been of any repeat interest to me is the very first one, where Chef is killed off. I thought that was the only episode that did the shows history justice.
So what do you guys think? Is South Park going the way of the Simpsons? Is it still as poignant and culturally pertinent as it once was? Am I just far too bored and spending way too much time on TA, using my sickness as an excuse to create lame threads like this asking questions that no one in their right mind has really spent all that much time thinking about? |

I agree with you, the Oprah episode was kinda dumb. The Al Gore one was funny, but yeah, it was just filler. I don't think they should quit, I just think they've ran out of things to make fun of. |

i dont really watch south park that much, but to tell you the truth, EVERYONE talks about it now. ever since the chef death episode the show has actually gotten MORE popular around where i live than in the past 3-5 years.
So i dunno. in all honesty, its a strong doubt that south park will stop, considering comedy central uses it to push their image just about every chance they get. |

I don't really care if a tv-show is political active or not.
It's all about entertainment imho.
If Southpark starts to suck, it will be doubtless better to quit.
I don't know which episodes they are sending right now in Germany, but yet these are quite entertaining and funny. |

yeah, 5, 6, 7 were my favorites.
i dunno - i think it would be interesting to see how far SP could go.
sometimes i do think that they should revert back to just the boys and their adventures in town, vs trying to make a political statement or something. |

I guess I'm not asking IF they'll quit, but whether or not they should.
Seinfeld arguably quit at the absolute height of it's popularity, and I personally think that their ability to cash in on the show after the fact was significantly increased by this move. It maintained the legitimacy of the show among it's c0r fans.
The Simpsons, on the other hand, has done a wonderful job of alienating a lot of us who were huge fans at one point, but now find the show absolutely abhorrent.
I'm just wondering if South Park, regardless of how popular and profitable it is, is at a crossroads for the series with regard to keeping/alienating it's long time fans. |

I disagree that the chef episode was the highlight of this episode. Chef's recycled quotes, chopped up and screwed to make him sound like a pervert - that was funny the first 3 times. Then it got old, quick. And the whole child molestation thing - the only funny part that came out of that was the scene where the detective molests the child doll. Other than that - wtf, chef joins a pedophile club? Seems to be outta nowhere.
Now my favorite 2 episodes from this season have been the Al Gore one (yes, I'm super cereal) and Smug Alert (I prefer to be part of the solution, not a part of the problem, mkay?) Those were fresh and funny.
Cartoon wars 1&2 + Oprah, those sucked big time in my book. So I guess ... it's 2 hits and 4 misses for me in this season so far. I hope today's episode will be a good one.
So should they quit ... nah, they have to put out quite a bit more awful episodes before I admit that SP has jumped the shark, rather than it just having a poor, unlucky streak. They'll recover from it all :) (I hope). |

Oh, I did in fact forget about the "Smug" episode. That was hilarious, probably my favorite from the season.
"I want 3!"
