Chris Liebing and Speedy J Collabs session format:
The focus of our show is collaboration and improvisation. we will both be on stage performing together for the duration of the show. as with the previous collabs sessions in detroit and rotterdam the way we perform totally blurs the boundaries between dj-ing and playing live. for the music we draw from a huge collection of custom loops, tracks and sound which were generated during our studio sessions in the past 2 years, and there will also be use of other people's music (the last remaining element of dj-ing in our show), however, everything can be manipulated, morphed, re-arranged and treated on the fly.
We both have well over a decade of experience in dj-ing and playing live and although both disciplines are still considered as 2 different ways to perform by many, we noticed that the performance setups we used to dj (chris) and playing live (jochem) became virtually the same in the past few years. after our first collabs sessions performed on our individual systems we realized that it was time to let go of the idea of being strapped into 2 these disciplines. so we spent some time rethinking our setups and put together a complex hi-tech performance system for the tour consisting of laptops, controllers, samplers, and many effects, and we decided to leave out the turntables. our performance system will allow us do anything that can be done on a traditional dj setup, plus many many things more. by eliminating as many restricting technological elements as possible we achieved maximum flexibility and performance freedom which allows us to take the music to a new level. we both are closely involved in the designing process of some of the tools we use. for example native instruments traktor, and a new mixer / controller by allen & heath. both companies will support the tour with their products and with articles on their websites.
Musically the focus will be on the sound we have been working on for the collabs album. it will be highly danceable and energetic, much like he sets the audience knows from us as individual performers, but it will be much more dynamic, varied and adventurous. where long sets by single performers can get boring at parts, our experience is that a collabs show keeps the crowds attention throughout the entire set. visually it will be much more entertaining: we noticed that the fun of jamming together really effects the crowd. because of the high level of impovisation every show will be totally different.
Playing our early collabs sessions we found that the show works best when we have a large time slot. it can easily entertain an entire night. for clubs we think of 4 to 6 hours even longer if required, and for festivals 3 or 4. a 3 hour slot is the absolute minimum to have enough time to develop a good set, however we would like to stay away from short shows as much as possible. the ideal situation would be to have a seperate room or tent available for the total duration of the night or festival, however we realize this will not be possible in most cases. but our experience on the previous collabs sets teaches us the show will benefit tremendously from large slots. keep in mind that our individual shows combined would normally also take up 3 to 3.5 hours minimum.
