Impedance Question

The problem...

I have Sony Amp & Speakers of 8 Ohms impedance.

I have obtained a Sony Subwoofer from a surround sound system we no longer use. This is of 6 Ohm impedance.

The idea...

To get a bit of extra low end out of my crappy hifi connecting the Sub to my speakers in a series arrangement.

Bearing in mind I am not after super accurate sounding stuff here, just a bit more thump, is this idea wise or not?

Thanks,

Lunar

Impedance is easy once you get it. But it took me until literally this quarter of school to really understand it.

I don't know how much you know about electrcity and stuff, but basically, the imepdance of the speaker, is the measure of resistance in the coil. The higher the impedance, the more accurate the sound the speakers usually can reproduce (high impedance high-fi speakers have much crisper sound).

The actual coil in the speaker is doing more work, and putting a resistance on the electrical energy.

The way it works in live sound anyway.

If you connect:

(2) 8 ohm speakers in parallel: you get a 4 ohm load on the amp
(2) 8 ohm speakers in series: you get a 16 ohm load on the amp

As far as your sony hi-fi deck? Check to see how big of a load it can handle.

I'm guessing in your situation it really won't matter. IDEALLY. You should get a matched pair of both speakers and subs. That will give you the best quality of sound. But really. As long as your amp can handle it, a 6 ohm sub isn't going to be a problem at all most likely.

Hope this helped.
