another one of these silly technomonster newbie questions.

as i have mentioned i would like to release one dance track that i have spent 12 years on. silly me, hey.
just wondering if i can get away with just prodcing a cd with a radio edit and 2 or 3 re-mixes.

do i have!!! to release a vynil as well. dont djs now have both mediums to play with.

it would just be easier i guess.

is vynil still the preferred thing in 2006 and djs will get pissed off with me asking them to play the cd.

Just release the .wav files as on a netlabel and you should be fine. Vinyl is still highly respected as a mixing tool; its sound is warmer and about as highest quality it can get, but cds and even just mp3s/waves are extremely abundant right now due mostly to convenience (in releasing, transportation, etc).

12 years? wow well it better be good then :), There's quite a few producers who do all of that. Usually they produce a full length track, and they may make edits of it as well, sometimes a "radio edit" if it's a mainstream, club type track that is "radio-friendly" like PvD's "Time Of Our Lives" or Armin's "Yet Another Day" etc. Sometimes they may remix the track to fit a particular style, like they may make a techier version for techno DJs, or a trancier for for trance DJs etc.

Most producers nowaydays send their tracks to record labels via internet or on promo CDs, from there if they get signed, various record companies might buy the track, so you might have two or more companies releasing the track under their name, and usually their is an "official" release. Nowadays MP3/WAVs are released sometimes before vinyl records are released, sometimes after, so if your track is going to get released, the best way to go about it is send it in to a label, whatever label fits the style. They will release the vinyl, not you, however most labels are now coming out with digital releases, and if it gets popular, they may release on vinyl later. But i'de say digital nowadays is the way to go, so just send it to them via email or on a CD in the mail and wait and see if they like it...you can also give it to a DJ directly, if your at an event of somekind.

CDs are the preferred nowadays. It hurts to say it, but it's true.

And every prominent (and most not prominent) vinyl DJs still use CD players for the tracks they only have on CD. Which is usually a lot in terms of promo tracks...they're usually CDs now. By the time the promo vinyl comes out, if it comes out, the CD's been around for a while.
