This squad won't win anything this year. I can't believe he's included walcott, a player who had half a decent season in the championship of all places.
the likelyhood of owen and rooney being fully fit for the groups is slim.
I can't wait to hear what ian wright has to say about phillips' omission from the squad, I hope he's raging, should make for some quality entertainment during bbc's coverage.

At least England are there and will have the opportunity to win. Can't say the same for ye old Scots.
Rooney will be ready. He'll have more than 7.5 weeks to prepare assuming England make it out the group play without him, and I'm sure they will. I broke the same bone in my foot plus the fifth metatarsal and was playing hockey as well as tennis and soccer within 6 weeks and Rooney is obviously much stronger, fitter and determined than I. He will be ok and will serve as the rallying call for this squad.
I have to say I'm surprised about Walcott but the kid is going to be spectacular. Lack of SWP is surprising but that's what he gets for going to Chelsea and losing his first team playing time. I'm relieved that Sol is back as well....and please, dont let Ferdinand on the pitch! |

I think Sven is trying to borrow a page out of Brazil's books when they took ronaldo to the 94 world cup when he was just 16 to give him that exposure but at the same time, how the hell do you select a player you have not seen play especially when your top 2 strikers have fitness problems.
I read on soccernet that they are going to depend on crouch to score the goals should owen and rooney not prove their fitness which translates into - England are ing ed if rooney and owen arn't 100%. Other than that, the team looks solid. The midfield is probably the best among the 32 teams provided Cole and Beckham can carry their current form to germany. Central defence is again a problem with Campbell playing like he doesnt care and ferdinand far from his best. Hopefully Ledley King can make a speedy recovery. |

wtf.. what is wrong with u people.
Jamie carragher should be beside john terry in the starting lineup.
The ing guy is just class and has proven what a legend he is these past 2 seasons..
He plays with his heart on his sleeves and is 10x more committed than rio and sol will ever be...not mentioning hes 10x the defender.
Sven is nuts to pick theo.If arsene doesnt pick him, what does that tell him about theo as a player.I've seen this boy play and frankly..its like watching a young michael owen MINUS the finishing. Hes no rooney thats for sure.
England are ed.
heres a proper starting lineup
---------Robinson---------
Neville-Carra-Terry-Bridge
Becks-cole-lampard-Downing
-----gerrard-
-----crouch--------
Gerrard and cole can switch positions depending on the opponents. Not a fan of crouch even though i'm a liverpool fan..but this is the best they can conjure up without owen and shrek.
PS. Dont give me the racist card because the english team is all white. I would have wanted bent in place of crouch |

| I love how you guys are shrugging off this kid as if he's e. Does anybody remember Owen in 98? It really wasn't that long ago. So what if he hasn't played in the Premiereship for a few months? He could very well surprise the hell out of everyone like most young, but inexperienced, players do. He'll most likely only see time if Rooney and Owen aren't good to go and even then, as a late sub. |

Ownen in 98 when he was picked scored 21 goals for liverpool in the same season before the world cup, made over 30 appearances for them. What has walcott done for arsenal? nothing.

He has never played in the premiership, and has only played half a season in the championship

Michael19 said what I was going to say in response to you Smitty.
Im not going to critize the kid because I know he has talent and who knows maybe he will blossom this world cup it would be great to see that sorta like a fairy tale story.
But if I was a English fan right now and knowing that Owen & Rooney may not be fully fit til after the group stage I would want the best players that we had behind them. Which to me where Defoe & Bent who both didnt get the call up. Sven is taking a gamble but you can say he is also taking a gamble on Rooney & Owen....I kinda wish being an Italia fan that Lippi would take a gamble and call up Cassano who cares if he isnt playing for Real at the moment he still is world class |

yeah I find it strange as well that Bent isn't on the team but a guy like Andy Johnson is. But Sven has taken his so called "experienced" guys in the last two tournies and hasn't made it past the QF. Might as well take a gamble on a young lad who could inspire passion into these sometimes passionless England players (ie Gerrard who just never performs in an England uniform).
Anyway, it's not reason to say England are done just because Sven made two interesting roster decisions. Trust me, Rooney will be back, whether Scottish Windbag over at Man U wants him there or not. Rooney at 80% is better than no Rooney and everyone knows it. He will be there for the Round of 16. Beckham recovered from the same type of injury in 2002. He wasn't fully fit but he still played well. Rooney is a warrior and he wants to be part of this thing more than anyone. I don't know about Owen though...he's taking too long. |
