so im looking at 2 cars. same car but diff engine and diff colors. 2001 GTI either red or silver. the red one has the more desireable 1.8t but the other one is silver with the vr6. i hate red on cars but i want the 1.8t. red is more expensive on insurance and cops give lots of tickets to red car drivers. whats your opinion? |

Motor does not really matter, both are solid powerplants.
Some of the earlier VR6 had heat problems because of the way the motor is designed with the waterjackets in the block. I don't know which years, but the vr6 is kind of a flakey design IMHO. More torque though.
1.8t is much easier to work on and modify (although you said you won't be doing anything, but it has potential.)
I do not know if the vr6 requires premium. 1.8t does.
Silver FTW, Red and Yellow catch the most eye and it doesn't have anything to do with insuring the car, i don't think, but you have a higher risk of a tickets for sure.
Also, silver is pimp because it doesn't show dust or fingerprints. My WRX is white, I enjoy the turbo, you will on the 1.8 as well.

i knew about the heat problem but i thought that only effected the jettas? and i never said i wont be doing anything to it. 150HP isnt much. my car i have now is same. and paint color does effect insurance rates. god damnit. i need to make a decision asap. i need to get rid of my car i have. and yes silver ftw but 1.8t ftw too. |

I'm a fan of the 1.8t. the engine is solid and has a lot of potential, but i'm not a fan of VW's/Audi's. They have horrible electrical systems. Most common problems are the Window regulator and Ignition coil(ignition coil is for the 1.8t 2001 & 2002 models).
For 10k, why not get a used Accord or Civic Si? my buddy picked up a 2002 Civic Si for $9,500 last month, its a Honda, so that means cheap insurance, cheap maint., good resale value and reliable. |

Ben, on second thought, it. Take your chances with the red. Call me when you do, I have an orbital buffer that will clean that paint smoother then a baby's ass. |

I have a black 2003 GTI 1.8T. I love it!!! I am paying through the nose for it though :( My monthly car payment is $300 plus insurance. I bought certified pre-owned so I have like a 4 year warranty on it. My engine light has come on once since I bought it. It was just a minor problem (needed a seal replaced). The 1.8T does not require 91 octane gas but is is highly recommended. Beware of chipping though because once you do your gas consumption will go through the roof!!! Nothing is better than blowing away ty civics and integras with little effort. |
