I only saw ableton recently for the first time, and I like it. Can't help Nem, but wanted to ask what you guys think of the cross-fader. It just seemed a bit 'bang' there it is to me, and not so much of a fade. Mind you I was only observing, so it may have been the users method. So what's it really like? |
yep the curve is quite sharp |

| Thanx. That is a bit of a floor for me, but there are ways around it I guess (use track faders) |

I don't find the faders to be that smooth either :( but you can assign MIDI to get more control if you can. I hook it on my mixer and use the faders for more precision ;) |

| Cool, so using a midi controller of some sort actually makes the fade more progressive? I guess then it's the way the software is set (ie not enough points on the x-fader like 128, but more like 3 measure points) |

Ow, sorry, I'm not sure about the MIDI altering the fader curve. But you'll prolly control it better. What I do with my mixer is leave the fader on Live on default setting volume and just use the volume on my mixer (curve all the way to smooth :P) |

Now this is what I like, people talking about the technical aspects of Ableton and actually providing some really good info.
I thank you so kindly for your input. :) Some great posts there.
With regards to switching to Ableton for playing out, no it will be a long time before I do that, but I do also make productions and re-edit a lot of the music I play out to create better flow during a set. Ableton is a good tool for this.
I have seen a few Ableton performances and yes they have been interesting but sometimes they do get a little selfinduldgent.
In my experience as a DJ people sometimes don't react well to too much messing around with tracks. You will even sometimes have people be upset because you played a different mix of a track or didn't play it for long enough.
While I see Ableton as a great tool I tend to regard it as something I will use if it becomes the standard in terms of DJing. I still think the digital explosion (and yes, it's coming) has not yet graced u with the full impact of what can be done.
Cheers

Ok, here is a question and it may be slightly controversial so I am wearing my finest asbestos underpants...
The situation is this, I am looking to make Demos and prepare non-live radio mixes on my PC using Ableton.
I have tried that beat warping thing and it is doing my freaking head in. I have read the manuals. I am missing something that is probably pretty darn obvious but not sure what.

A couple buddies of mine are doing a CD and, because of time constraints, used Ableton rather than just mixing it 50 times until they got a perfect take.
I did the warping for them which I think they took for granted because it only took me half an hour to do. And in the process I showed them my technique, which took me a lot of time to perfect, but is easy to learn.
Soooo I wonder if I should do a video on it. I could probably do it this weekend. And if you wanted to FTP me the tracks I could use your tracks as examples for the video. If this sounds interesting PM me and we can work out the details.
(Please nobody else PM me. If I do it I'll post it for all to see.) |

Mr Chambers... you would be a hero to me if you would take the time to do that.
It's great to see that there are so many out there who are willing to share good information with muppets like myself ;)
Cheers
