Questions re: selecting a Producer or DJ name.....

Couple of quick questions.....
Say you want to select a producer name or DJ name and you are unsure as to if the name is already taken. You search somewhere like discogs.com only to find that there are like 10+ producers or DJ's that have already used this name.
What are the rules or regulations against using the same exact name?
Do you have to wait until the producer(s) is retired to use this name?
Can you cleverly edit the name to somthing similar to suit yourself?
Can you release music under this name eventhough 10+ producers have already used it?
Are you able to copyright this name so the rest of these other producers are no longer able to use it? |

I think you can use any name unless its specific. something like DJ Tiesto is a blatant copy. then again something like DJ Ultra would just be a common word.
There are plenty of artists that use their real life names and alot of people have the same names so its no biggie if theres someone out there who has the same name.
Just try not to use any of the big guys' names and youll be fine. |

if 10+ people already used it, why would you want to use such an unorginal name?
i'd say try to pick a more original name, something no one else has.
otherwise, you could use an umlaut on one of the vowels to set it apart (ex: lücid). ;) |

Well I have used the name as my alias for other things like email, screen names, video game user name, for quite a while so its a name that kind of stuck with me. I didnt look it up to see if anyone has used it up till recently.
So yea 10+ people HAVE used it but its no one really big (or that I have ever heard of for that matter) and most of the people that used it were like 1 hit wonders from like 1994 or something :P from what I read on discogs.
I have 2 other optional names as aliases in the event this one doesnt work out. |

I am seriously having a hard time with this....I have like 3 names that I am willing to use and that is one of them. I am a girl so I dont want a name thats overly masculine but then again I dont want a name thats overly cutsey of too feminine and at the same time I want it to be something I can relate to....Quite a dilema :(
and whenever I do figure out the greatest name I find out its taken :toothless
Ive been racking my brain for a year or so....anyone have any suggestions. |

eh I have considered that but I dont think it will work...granted my name is unique but no one on the face of the earth besides people of my own nationality will be able to pronounce it which is something I dont want. Something short catchy and easy to remember works for me :p |

Well it's a bit like if you were a superhero and you called yourself Captain Amazing. Just sounds corny to me.

but seriously hes right. the name isnt memberable at all. how many mix cds/songs are out there with Euphoria plastered all over them? the whole trance genre is built on the term ffs. Id advise something more unique. |
