The last book I finished was Shantaram by Gregory Roberts, due to a recommendation by TA tathi. The greatest book I've read yet, hands down. I've even resorted to making a promise to myself to visit India within the next two years because of it. Look for it to be made into a movie 2006, starring none other than Depp. Buy it now here.
Currently reading "Love in the Time of Cholera." by Marquez. |

sounds disgusting. i will definitely get my hands on it
i was reading a review on that book literally 10 minutes ago. that book as well as "the templar legacy" are two books on my 'to buy' list. if you havent read any of dan brown's other books i highly recommend them. angels and demons is basically the prequel to da vinci code and is full of plot twists and really makes you think. its a definite page turner and i think i may have enjoyed it more than da vinci code, but i also may be alone on that.
his other two books, 'digital fortress' and 'deception point' arent similar than those two in that they arent about religious history but both are great reads. deception point reminds me of a tom clancy style book but its much better written and much more exciting. in fact deception point might be my favorite of his 4 |
I thought deception point was complete . It was horrible, to be honest. I thought it lacked any provocative thought and was sooooo far fetched, it made the miracle survival from jumping off the helicopter in "Angels and Demons" seem believable.
Stay away from deception point. it was a waste of time and brain capacity. actually, scratch that - no brain capacity was really needed.
I loved "Angels and Demons" better than any of the other Brown's books. Even better than davinci code. However, all of his books are rated PG and very... "made for movie"-like. It's almost that he wrote them to make them very easy to translate into movies.
I would strongly recommend the following books:
Neil Gaiman - "American Gods" - I'm sure it will hit your spot for fantasy, suspense, murder, gore, and dark twisted humor. I think this would be probably an ideal recommendation for what you are looking for. Here's what one of the buyers said about the book, I agree completely:
| quote: | | Debatable whether this is a horror title or not. However the when the book ended I wanted to kill myself because there was no more. I say that's horror. |
Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett - Good Omens - funny, very clever look at the appocalypse and great read.
Chuck Palahniuk - Choke (the mastermind behind "Fight Club") -any of his books should satisfy your thirst for gore and dark humor.
Irwin Welsh - Trainspotting, Porno, Glue, and Extasy - terrific, very well-written and gripping books.
I like Grisham's few books... "The Testament", "The Partner", and "A Time to Kill" - were all excellent.
enjoy...
Oh, and Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" should also be added to that list - another brilliant book. All of his books are fantastic. He's currently in my top 5 writer's list.
Another wonderful set of books to read if you like Sci-Fi:
"Altered Carbon", "Broken Angels", and "Woken Furies" - mind-blowing cyberpunk thriller/mystery books. Especially Altered Carbon - WOW! Must read for any fan of Matrix and the like. Definitely a kick. Very high-paced, "in your face", and grabs you within first 2 pages and never lets go.
Older Sci-Fi favorites:
Robert Heinlein - "Time Enough For Love" and "I will fear no evil" - two terrific classics. Also, for humorous quotes, read "The notebooks of Lazarus Long" |

Stephen King - The Shining
Much better than the movie. Awesome book.
Stephen King - Eyes of the Dragon
More of a fantasy story than a thriller/horror book. Set in medieval times, has a lot of plot twists, deception, killings, etc.
Stephen King - It
ing crazy book. Its really really long and drawn out though. Not really comparable to Dan Brown books.
Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs are also great. |
I finished IT in 2 weeks flat. i was so absorbed by that story line that each time i picked it up, i read about 90 pages at a time. so mesmorizing. and way the hell better than the movie [stupid made for TV bullcrap].
as with the Shining. that has to be my favorite book evar. at one point i was literally sitting on the edge of my seat. |

I'm excited for you! Don't hesitate in forming a discussion group via PM's after every chapter. Just make sure you PM tathi as well. :stongue: |

heh, it might take me a while... i usually don't attempt to tackle books that long unless i know i have the time, and with summer coming up, i can't say i'll be doing a whole lot of reading...
although i do look forward to laying out by the pool with a book this summer. |

More than likely you've already read it (for school or otherwise), but 1984 is a very good read. I really like these types of books. Also, The Giver is a good read as well (kinda along the same lines of 1984).
Yeah, I'm into stories that are built around mass opression. The ones I've read always have a twist to them, and the ones I've read as well, don't always have a happy ending... |

I never watched the IT movie cause I heard it sucked and I dont want to ruin the amazingness of it in my head. IT has to be the most descriptive/in depth book i've ever read. At the end of the book I felt like I personally knew each and every character.
The Shining, also is one of my favorite books ever. It was the second? King book I ever read, and I was like 12 or something. I have this unnatural fear of bees/wasps, so on the night that I read the part about the wasps, I couldnt sleep with the book on the nightstand next to me. I was about to put the book in the freezer, but then realized how ridiculous that was. So instead I put it on the other side of the house inside a locked room. |
